••• BREAKING - "October Surprise" hit job on Reid Hispanic aide one week before election •••

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20101026/el_yblog_upshot/harry-reid-aide-off-campaign-after-reports-of-sham-marriage

Harry Reid's Hispanic-media press secretary Diana Tejada was just dismissed from his campaign because she had had a sham marriage in which she was paid by a Lebanese so that he could stay in the country illegally.

Tejada reportedly lied to FBI agents. The sham marriage began in 2003. But all this leaks out - SURPRISE! SURPRISE! - one week before the election since Angle is trying to get Hispanics to not vote and that having backfired and angering Hispanics, somebody did a hit job to bring out dirt on a Hispanic aide to Reid, forcing Reid to have to fire her, which could have the effect of angering Hispanics against Reid. And it foments the meme being pushed by Angle that Reid wants to give Social Security to illegal aliens etc.

Who leaked this legal problem one week before the election? The FBI? Why didn't the FBI deal with this matter sooner, instead of all this being disclosed just one convenient week before the election?

This has more to do with screwing Reid on the Hispanic vote than any genuine desire to uproot crime. If anything the FBI DELAYED justice on the crime so it could be used a week before the election for political purposes -- a political hit job.

The Nevada race is incredibly close. Reid may benefit from a good ground game and enthusiastic Hispanic support coupled with Hispanic anger at GOP-connected ads telling Hispanics not to vote. Now that's in doubt. Nevada is going to go nuts over this and it threatens to hurt Reaid with both Hispanics and whites. How convenient. How perfectly plotted. Now an attempt has been made to again turn the tables, backed by the FBI, to again undermine Hispanic support for Reid.

And look who they target -- Reid's liaison to Hispanic media. This took planning, research, Machiavellian calculation. Someone decided to find THE ONE PERSON most responsible for Reid's ties to the Hispanic community and go after that person, dig up dirt on her --- and then SPRING it one week before the election.

Powerful people in this country, INCLUDING WITHIN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT are putting the screws on with Hispanics to rig the Nevada Senate race. Hispanics are the political scapegoat this year and they put the screws on. This is an "October surprise" against Reid.

This is a "screw d'etat" against Harry Reid.

5. It's a double play to force a schism between Reid and Hispanics AND undermine Reid with whites.

And there is no time between now and election day to repair the damage.

How convenient.

3. Oh I see. So Reid, who knew nothing about this, deserved it.

Yeah right.

Pay no attention to the timing!

7. Not necessarily.
I dislike the idea of employers or potential employers snooping into peoples' marriages.

This is different than the traditional undocumented worker scandal. Employers are required to ask for proper documentation of employees' work status, they really have no business evaluating their employees' marriages.

4. And Reid was supposed to do what?
Demand to see the bloody sheet as proof of the validity of the marriage?

8. Exactly. Given that the aide had been questioned by the FBI Reid had no choice but to dismiss her.

But attempts will be made to use this to depress Hispanic support for Reid AND increase white support for Angle.

11. The whole idea is to make Reid "damned if he does and damned if he doesn't."

If he fires the aide he loses Hispanic votes.

If he doesn't fire the aide he loses white votes.

I'm not blaming Reid.
I'm not even blaming the aide. What she did was illegal but I wouldn't judge her without knowing her personal difficulties.

In any case, it's not Reid's fault if he acted promptly to dismiss the aide. But the Nevada media will be all over this to screw Reid one way or the other. "Reid is soft on illegal aliens" --- that's what the right wing will scream. They've been saying this already and now they have new ammo.

One week before the election.

Purely a coincidence.

"Reid deserved it."

Blah blah blah.

10. The GOP made them marry in 2003 just for this moment?
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 08:27 PM by stray cat
Wow - how many others have been forced into marrying other people by the GOP in the last 10 years!

12. The question isn't whether they broke the law, but what Reid was supposed to do about it?
Employers have no responsibility to screen for this stuff. There's no expectation whatsoever that Reid or his campaign should have known about this. Once they found out, it seems they took the appropriate action by letting her go.

13. No. The right wing power structure has dirt on lots of people. They spring it when they want.

There are files on millions of Americans. It is often used POLITICALLY.

Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.

That there are skeletons in someone's closet is not the whole story. It's holding off on nailing a lawbreaker until the last week of the campaign that is the real issue -- to nail Reid, not the aide.

16. When are we going to stop looking at every incident as a crisis??
The GOP just ignore the Media and move on. Reid should
just move on. I think most people would understand
that if she had been caught, Reid had no choice. Do
not treat it as if it is the end of the world.

18. This will NOT hurt Reid with Hispanics
His aide is not Illegal. She is American of Latin American heritage (most often Mexican yes I know).

She was not fired for being Illegal.

Harry Reid was NOT covering up for or claiming Ignorance of anyone's illegal status.

He is a 3rd party.

He is NOT Meg Whitman who hired an illegal, while pretending not to know, and then firing her when she was asked for help.

The woman has been fired, yes, but she will NOT be deported. Nothing will happen to her.

She was fired for entering a marriage of convenience for a foreign national from Lebanon.

This actually further emphasizes how American the aide was.

She was NOT a victim of circumstances beyond her control.

She was not helpless, because of her nationality.

As a Hispanic, I find it unfortunate how much the left likes to adopt a rather simplistic mode for Hispanic group think.

In this case the usual dumbing down of the Hispanic POV is overboard.

In regards to Reid, Latinos won't feel the need to blame anyone per se.

It's election time, and if there is anything said it'd be along the lines of -She knew what she was doing, and what would happen if she got caught.-

Latinos can see the difference.

Unlike non-Latinos they will NOT conflate the issues as if they are one in the same.

Now if she had been helping a family member who was illegal, then Latinos some at least would seriously resent Reid's actions.

19. Jonathan Seer, I appreciate your comments and I apologize for helping to oversimplify.

I am more worried about what is TRYING to be done to Reid than what will necessarily be gotten away with. This is a distraction that in a razor tight election at least sucks the oxygen out of a news cycle or two. That in ITSELF could cost Reid the election. And if Hispanics don't get alienated by this, there is still the fact that WHITES will see how the aide helped an illegal alien from Lebanon apparently. So they will still be going, "Dang! Illegal aliens! Gotta vote Republican!"

Hispanics are being used as a scapegoat to channel the anger and frustration over the bad economy into scapegoats so the rich continue to hog the wealth and get away with it by saying "They went that away" and "Vote Republican!"

Here's a chilling clip from a great movie from the 1930s about hatred of foreigners being used by the right wing (with Humphrey Bogart) and the right wing group seems to be defending the working man and winds up recruiting Bogart while wearing white sheets like the Klan ------ the all-white right wing group in the film is called "The Black Legion" which is the name of the film ------

I see America going the same way in this election, and whether the right gets away with it, it is certainly what they are trying to pull off.

It now looks like their fear mongering is going to garner for them the House of Representatives at least.
