The very LEAST Ms. Pelosi can do is to put impeachment in the media |
|
The last poll I saw had 40% of Americans in support of impeachment. If one thinks about that for more than a second, one realizes just how astonishing that number is. Almost half of the American people support the early removal of this president. Combine that with his approval ratings and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the fence sitters here are a light breeze away from tipping over.
All Ms. Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic leadership and party members have to do is put it into the pundit machine. It's simple, really. Ms. Pelosi can call a press conference and say "If the President doesn't sign this bill that sets a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq, we may have to go the impeachment route."
Let the pundits point out that they don't have the votes. Let Wolf Blitzer hold interviews and discuss it with Paul Begala and Joe Watkins. Let Bill O'Reilly call Ms. Pelosi a traitor. Let Sean Hannity have a conniption fit. Let Rosie O'Donnell yell at Elisabeth Hasselbeck over it. Let Keith Olbermann rally the base. Get people talking about impeachment.
When the American people support it, the votes will be there. Let me reiterate once again: 4 in 10 Americans support impeachment already, and it's not even "on the table".
This is something the Republicans have been doing successfully for years. The Democrats have to start defining the issues of the day. The people need to see it on TV. Get impeachment to be the issue.

1. Here's the kicker: When people say they don't support impeachment, |
|
many of them are saying they do support Pelosi. Particularly the Democratic sheep, of which I assume there are plenty.

2. Wise, wise words Lynyrd. |

I also believe that the Republicans will jump on board, too, as the elections draw closer. Many of them are up for re-election, and they aren't going to want to be associated with Bush/Cheney at that point.
Supporting impeachment is a good way to put some distance between them. Isn't it an old Nazi ploy? Kill one of your own to make others think you aren't one of them? Still works today...
