Remember when characters on soaps were well-off, but not ultra-rich?

When the characters were doctors, lawyers, newpaper editors. I would've maybe called them "upper middle class."

Now the characters are multi-billionaires and live in real mansions. I think that change took place around the 1980's.

3. That's true. Phoebe Taylor on "All My Children" thought she ruled Pine Valley

between her marriage to a doctor and likely her trust fund, but that wasn't the emphasis on her fixation of superiority.

There were two camps initially in AMC: upper middle class typified by the Taylor family and the regular middle class exemplified by the Martin family.

"General Hospital"

there was so much personal drama going on with the doctors and nurses it's a wonder any of their patients survived
