My suggestion: Arm yourself with facts and reason
And use your brain and your mouth.

But that might be asking for too much.

Jon Stewart is right. The inmates are running the asylum.

1. I'm not loud enough to shout over them
and no amount of reason or reasonableness can overcome the vast empty caverns above their necks and behind their mouths.

3. Absolutely right. No point in having a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

6. Facts and reason and a .45 are not mutually exclusive. In fact they work well together.

9. Facts and reason do not work on the very
Freeperish and teabagger types. Even some seemingly respectable republicans will not listen to reason. They say your sources are "liberal," or they simply deny the facts. The best you can do is tell them that they can have their own opinions, but they cannot have their own facts.

10. The other side of this battle is completely immune (and oblivious) to facts and reason
They don't trust facts and reason. (The Devil created those! :o)

We need to fight them with something that can hurt them. Or at least get their attention.
