Coming Soon to America: Big Push for Austerity
Coming Soon to America: Big Push for Austerity

In Paris, university students join workers to protest pension and retirement reforms on Oct. 26. Their efforts across the country caused major disruption to France's economy, services, schools and transportation. (Photo by FRANCK PREVEL/Getty Images)
While big crusades for austerity—reserved for workers only, of course—are being waged in France and Great Britain, working people in the United States can also look forward to a major push for cutbacks in social spending and a longer wait before retirement.

Despite the evident need for vastly expanded government spending
and consumer buying power to lift each nation out of recession, the "austerity fad"—as economist Paul Krugman labels it—has been embraced by the corporate and political elites of major nations.

On December 1, the Deficit Reduction Commission, which Obama stacked with opponents of the American social safety net, will be releasing its recommendations. Expect the worst. The battle certain to follow the Deficit Commission will be a test of the AFL-CIO's resolve and ability to organize on behalf of hard-won workers' rights to a reasonable retirement age and a secure retirement.

LITTLE FIGHT THUS FAR IN BRITAIN, UNLIKE IN FRANCE

1. FFS We don't have anything to begin with!
No unions
No healthcare
No safety nets

More 'austerity' in the US will just mean more deaths from grinding poverty and lack of access to healthcare

:grr:

3. Corporationgs are sitting on tons of cash ...
The deadbeat rich are making more and still not working or doing anything productive for the rest of us.

We pay the officials to heard us as human cattle into smaller pens while they suck-up what's left and shunt the fruits of our labors and lives into the hands of the haves while they shout "Austerity!".

How more obvious can the flaunting of power and money get? I advocate transparency in some matters, but this is like an obese Emperor parading around in the nude at this point.

Meanwhile, were hear a lot of mooing and bleating here as if that will call the culprits on the carpet and change anything at all in the favor of the masses.

Oh, the Great Austerity is here with a vengeance, though it may not yet be on your block or in your neck of the woods. It will be soon, unless you are solvent and situated and, hopefully, rich. Then, your only concern will be to sequester yourself and your goods from the teeming masses of refugees and useless eaters mulling about and daring to want what you have.

Odds are, nobody is going to fight the final draining of what is left of your economic blood, so why bother. Rather prepare for less of less of less and try not to be too annoyed at the inequity of the equation where your loss means more and more and more for those who have way too much already.

4. Coming Soon: Austerity, whether pushed or not.
When you run out of money and credit you don't have any money and credit.

We ran out of money years ago, and we are running out of credit.

Can't spend what you don't have.

8. The rub of course is that there is nothing left to push.
McCorpPlanet has pillaged and plundered everything but the roof and boards on the walls. When they cut, we bleed.
