US weighing military aid for Lebanon

May 22, 2007, 18:11 GMT

Washington - The United States is considering whether to provide additional aid to the Lebanese military as it wages a fierce firefight with Islamic extremists holed up in a Palestinian refugee camp.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the Lebanese government has asked the United States for military assistance to fight the Fatah al-Islam group, which has ties to al-Qaeda.

'They have a request in and we're going to take a look at it,' McCormack said.

'This is a very, very brutal group of people that the Lebanese armed forces are dealing with, and they are doing a good job,' he said.

The United States provided Lebanon with about 40 million dollars in military aid in 2006, and so far this year has doled out about 5 million dollars, McCormack said.

Lebanese armed forces have been battling the Islamic extremists since Sunday in violence that has claimed dozens of lives in the camp near Tripoli.

2. Was is the U.S. who rendered Lebanon helpless by sending WMDs to Israel
...of some $100 million last summer. Now they wish to arm Lebanon so they can retaliate. Bush/Cheney's perpetual war policy in action!

4. Perpetual war indeed
