Less than two months into President Obama's Presidency the corporate media was hard at work manufacturing a voter backlash to redirect anger towards Wall Street towards anger towards Democrats. In Feburary 2009, Rick Santelli made his infamous Tea Party rant, which was used to give birth to the Tea Party movement, which ignored that the real Boston Tea Party was due to anger at East India Trading Company.
The corporate prograganda machine not only stoked anger on the right, but it stoked anger on the left by giving face time on major media only to those liberals who were willing to attack President Obama on the air. Krugman got a lot of face time when he complained that the stimulus was too small, but ignored when he dismissed Republican economic ideas as idiotic. Jane Hamscher was featured on Fox News with Grover Norquist when she demanded the firing of Timothy Geithner, but then she just as quickly fell off the media radar once she pushed for other progressive causes.
In time, the right wing propaganda stop bothering to give a platform to obliging progressives, but it invented its own grass roots sounding advocacy groups like "Latinos for Reform," which encouraged Hispanics not to vote in order to express their dissatisfaction at Democrats for not passing immigration reform notwithstanding the outright opposition from Republicans. Likewise, you have the Logcabin Republicans who attack President Obama lack of progress on gay and lesbian issues while giving Republican politicians a free pass.
Will we wake up and see that we are being used an manipulated? When I see DUers repeatedly blaming Democrats, but giving Republicans a free pass, I can only shake my head. Heck, on DU, I see many threads paying homage to the Log Cabin Republicans for their attacks from the left on President Obama's lack of effort on DADT, but this same groups is utterly silent with respect to the majority of Republicans.
Even today, as the Chamber of Commerce, and the Koch Brothers flood millions of dollars into Republican campaigns, in order to thwart President Obama's agenda, you see DUers insist that there has been no change, and that there is no difference between President Obama and Bush. Yet, corporate America is disagreeing vehemently with its wallet, and paying the corporate media to get you to support them.
So, here is a blast from the pass, which shows the opening shots in a corporate media propaganda campaign to thwart progressives, and stop the President's agenda.
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2009/02/06/biden-urges-passage-of-stimulus-despite-voter-backlash/Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged today that Democrats could face political repercussions in 2010 for their support of the $900 billion economic stimulus package.
“But when we do
, I’m sure you’re going to be nailed in ads, ‘Well they voted on that’ 30 second ads,” Biden told roughly 200 members of the House Democratic Caucus gathered here for their three day annual retreat. “I promise you as once said to me, ‘I’ll come campaign for you or against you, whichever will help you the most in your district.’ And so will the president because, again, we’re all in this together.”
The vice president also offered some trademark candor about the prospects of success.
He recalled a recent White House meeting with the president and senior aides in which they were discussing the many challenges the country faces. “If we do everything right, if we do it with absolute certainty, there’s still a 30% chance we’re going to get it wrong,” was his message at the meeting.
Biden warned that the consequences were too great for the country to allow politics to prevent action. “The only thing we can get wrong is not reaching a consensus among ourselves…and demonstrating to the American people that we’re thinking small and politically—you have not, you’ve thought big,” he said. All but 10 House Democrats voted for the bill.
