Why do Republican Women vote against Women's Rights?
I have always found this rather strange. We have a candidate for State Senate here in Florida who supported the Sonogram bill (that Charlie Crist vetoed) that said women should have a Sonogram before they can have an abortion. Abortion is a very private matter, just like rape. So then today Lizbeth Benaquisto is running an ad condemning her opponent because he ran an ad stating that she voted against women's rights. Today she says that she was raped 23 years ago:

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/state/saying-she-was-raped-state-senate-candidate-benacquisto-1000726.html

Mona Reis, founder of the Presidential Women's Center in West Palm Beach, which provides abortions, said she still supports Rader.

She said rape is a "travesty beyond travesty for any woman." But she said she has been involved in women's rights issues in the county since 1974 and cannot remember working with Benacquisto on any effort to help victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.

"I would have welcomed her help," Reis said. "For her to accuse Kevin who has been a defender of women for years when he was in office and before he was in office is such an outrage to me that I find it insulting."

So, why would a woman who was raped vote with a party that is clearly against women's rights?? Why would a woman who was raped continue to support an invasion of privacy?? I am just at a loss of words on this.

3. A couple of things
1. Misplaced trust in religious fundamentalists who write the policy for the republicans. God's love and all that.

2. The trauma of the rape is so horrifying that the victim wants to TRY to forget it ever happened and that it was a once-in-a-lifetime situation. There's no interest in them for reform of policies for other rape victims.

3. Alternatively, self-blame for the rape and since republicans blame women for being liberated and free and all that, it resonates with them.
