Man sentenced for beating daughter with belt (for not finishing her homework)
Man sentenced for beating daughter with belt

EAGLE MOUNTAIN -- An Eagle Mountain man who admitted to beating his 9-year-old daughter with a belt for not finishing her homework has been sentenced.

Fourth District Judge Claudia Laycock ordered Robert Tuttle, 40, to spend 30 days in jail, three years on probation and pay a fine of $1,173.

He has also been ordered to attend parenting and anger management classes recommended by his probation officer.

Utah County sheriff's deputies say Tuttle told them in February that he had whipped the girl at least 10 times.

4. No shit.
Been on the business end of a belt more than I care to remember.
My Mom actually made a "cat o' nine tails" to beat me with that she MADE by cutting up a belt, and nailing the leather strips into a block of wood.

Those were the days.

And this guy needs a ass kicking in a major way.

9. Was going to say.... Times have changed.
I think that's a positive, actually. If my dad were born 30 years later and was the same man, he'd have been in so much trouble.

13. Mine too,
belts, straightened wire coat hangers, broom handles...

It wasn't actually right or legal back then and I am glad it is prosecuted now.

5. Wow
Almost everyone I know was spanked growing up. And we didn't call the police on our parents.

6. The article doesn't state who called the police...
And getting spanked is not the same as being beaten with a belt.

8. I was slapped across the face several times as a child.
I never called the police. However, it traumatized me. To this day, I get extremely anxious if someone talks about parents hitting children, and I flinch if anyone makes a sudden move towards me.

You turned out fine? Great. Speak for yourself.

7. A belt? Really? For homework?
When my kids don't do their homework, I make them sit at the dinner table and work on it. They aren't allowed to get up for anything (even the bathroom) without asking first. They don't get to leave the table until I've reviewed the work and know it's complete.

Funny thing about that method...it's very effective. My kids know that they'll have to endure it if they get caught skipping homework, so they DON'T SKIP HOMEWORK. They'd rather do their work at their desks, in their rooms, than be forced to do it under the watchful eye of dad.

Beating them never even occurred to me.

12. Ugh. Why do people insist on beating their children?
My daughter responds very well to a variety of discipline techniques, not one of which involves violence.

Get a fucking grip people. Your children will be adults one day - and your behavior now can cause them serious problems later.
