3. The Ads Are Going To Backfire... |
|
People are tired of the volume...both in quantity and in negativity of the ads this year. It's been real bad with the local stations in this area as the 10:00 news is a parade of third party ads. There's a backlash on whose money is paying for these ads. The only ones who are happy are the stations who are getting a nice windfall in the midst of economic hard times. I honestly think the amount spent by people like Whitman and McMahon turned off voters; especially those who are struggling to stay above water while these people thrown money around with wreckless abandon.

7. Negative ads are used because negative ads work no matter what people claim. |
|
I don't see anything changing and I don't see any backlash coming. It would be nice if it were different, but I have to look at things as they really are as opposed to how I wish they would be.

9. Law Of Diminishing Returns |
|
You are right...negative ads can be very effective. The purpose is either to dirty the other guy or numb the voter. Either way it can have an effect...especially in a close race where the "soft" middle makes the difference.
I do think there is a saturation point where the people begin to turn off the messages...especially in the closing days of a campaign. We do see a lot of people comment on how they're sick of the attacks. This year, thanks to Citizen United, the amount of these ads have skyrocketed...we have never seen the airwaves so inundated. Then there is the question of secret money. Polls are showing people do care about disclosure and it has helped energize Democrats in recent weeks. So let's see where the dust settles on Tuesday. If it's a wave of Koch zombies then we can expect "bigger and worser" in two years.
Cheers...
