Measure would outlaw Islamic law in Oklahoma -- where it doesn't exist
Conservative supporters point to cases in Europe and a few in the U.S. that made reference to Sharia religious law. Muslims say it's a 'scare tactic' to further stigmatize them and whip up votes.

As the country grapples with its worst economic downturn in decades and persistent unemployment, voters in Oklahoma next week will take up another issue — whether they should pass a constitutional amendment outlawing Sharia, or Islamic law.

Supporters of the initiative acknowledge that they do not know of a single case of Sharia being used in Oklahoma, which has only 15,000 Muslims.

"Oklahoma does not have that problem yet," said Republican state Rep. Rex Duncan, the author of the ballot measure, who says supporters in more than a dozen states are ready to place similar initiatives before voters in 2012. "But why wait until it's in the courts?"
<snip>

Mohammed, of the Islamic Society, said that he feared that the measure could lead to politicians in other states trying to cash in on bashing Sharia law and Islam. "This garbage could really make things bad for Muslims," he said.

1. I have decided to never sing the national anthem again with the correct words. I will now sing,
"The land of the idiots, and home of the cowards".

5. The funny thing is if you replaced the word "Sharia" with "Biblical"...
...but otherwise kept it exactly the same, most of these RW Christians would probably support it.

6. If I were a Muslim, OK is one of the state in which I would never
consider living. Its neighbor, TX is another. In fact, any state that is red during national elections would be a state I would simply avoid.

Why borrow trouble?

8. What makes a law "Islamic?" If Islam outlaws theft, does theft become legal?
Or perhaps OK just outlawed calling a law "Islamic?"

Are they outlawing Islamic courts?

I admit I just woke up and I have not read the article.

9. I was reading that last night
I was reading up on the ballot initiatives before I go vote here in Oklahoma. If you read the whole thing, it references international law and then Sharia. The text of the ballot as follows:

"This measure amends the State Constitution. It changes a section that deals with the courts of this state. It would amend Article 7, Section 1. It makes courts rely on federal and state law when deciding cases. It forbids courts from considering or using international law. It forbids courts from considering or using Sharia Law.

International law is also known as the law of nations. It deals with the conduct of international organizations and independent nations, such as countries, states and tribes. It deals with their relationship with each other. It also deals with some of their relationships with persons.

The law of nations is formed by the general assent of civilized nations. Sources of international law also include international agreements, as well as treaties.

Sharia Law is Islamic law. It is based on two principal sources, the Koran and the teaching of Mohammed. "

I get the feeling their main objective is to be able to thumb their nose at international law and they threw the Sharia thing in there to strike a chord with the Christian fundies here to get them to vote for it.
