I have no idea how to interpretet early voting numbers

I have no idea how to interpretet early voting numbers
I need to have one question answered before I know what to make of early voting numbers:

Traditionally, how does early voting compare to final election results? Are early voters typically Republican? Democrats? How did early voting compare to final results in 2008 or 2006?
