118. Really and truly, I had no intentions of hurting the feelings of anyone
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 02:39 AM by truedelphi
Who lost precious family, co workers, and/or friends that day. My husband's best friend, her brother worked for a brokerage firm, and had he not skipped work that day, he'd have died at his 89th floor desk. (Every one but five other employees of his firm lost their lives that day.)

But like 67% of all New Yawkers, I don't believe the Official Conspiracy story: as until laws of physics are somehow changed, you know and I know that 100 story skyscrapers cannot fall to the ground inside the buildings' footprints in under twenty seconds.

I quit working on all my creative writing projects that day. As I knew that we were about to see the biggest take away in terms of Civil rights that any democracy has ever known, without that democracy having foreign troops come in and impose their will. I was as sick at heart over what I knew was coming in terms of wars that would be unending, and legislation with great sounding names like "Patriot Act" that would be occurring, and I knew that it would strengthen the presidency of a man I despised, George W Bush, just at a time when a lot of America was starting to wake up to the fact that his Administration was totally inadequate.

I grew up in an America where the Cold War warriors told us every night on the news that if we didn't have the will to resist communism, we would see our factories shut down, our jobs "disappeared," our fellow citizens become zombies believing endless propaganda, our schools' educational standards decline, our health care become totally inadequate et al. And I watched as our defense budget mushroomed out of sight. And then the Wall fell, we were told that we defeated communism. Yet somehow despite our banishing the Big Bad Boogie Monster of the 1950's and 1960's and '70's, we still have to be always afraid.

And despite our vanquishing of the Soviet Union, we still have witnessed: our factories shut down, our jobs "disappeared," our fellow citizens become zombies believing endless propaganda, our schools' educational standards decline, our health care become totally inadequate et al. Though that has happened from within and not from without.

But hey, at least we still have been provided with an endless supply of New Big Bad Boogie Men (And Women) to fear.

it is so nice to see that i am not the only one who has this line of thought.... excellent! we saw similar signs.... the drug war was about to end in my opinon, traffic and blow were big hit movies, then bam...war on terrorism instead of the war on drugs as an excuse to take away our rights....

and i am with you the 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 buildings in the world trade center complex that fell into their own footprint simply from being on fire (tower 7 wasnt hit by a thing!)... i smelled the bullshit sept 11 2001..

134. I smelled it, not only with the WTC, but with the Pentagon
There are pictures of big reels of wire that are standing on end, still standing after the blast and crash at the Pentagon. What's more is there is no footprint from where the wings and engines hit the building. It smells funny to me. Always has, always will. I have yet for an explanation for this.

150. I was asking questions on that DAY.
Since then (and reading The Terror Timeline), I've never believed them and think it was all too much to be called a wholesale ball-dropping.

Not even the smarmy fucks at Popular Mechanics can spin the real news that was documented before, during and after that day into an on-the-level plausability. While it's pretty easy to shoot down the weirder, out-there theories, most of their "debunking" on actual documented events is just flimsy, "appeal to authority" garbage.

I also went down there often to get electronics parts, before they closed all the electronics surplus places on Radio Row. Those massive steel beams were made to resist a fully fueled 727 from hitting it. FYI-- A fully fueled 727 has MORE fuel than the "planes" that hit the WTC.

Count me in that 72% of New Yorkers who do not believe the official report.

reports??!?!?!

Come on, you don't know what the intent was. That's the problem with stopping a terrorist attack BEFORE it happens is that it's really not that big of a deal. BUT once a Terrorist attack happens, it's WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY didn't we stop it????

If they had arrested the 9/11 guys at their flight schools, everyone would have said, "what's the worst they could have done? I'm sure nothing major, blah, blah blah."

45. It's not ridicule, but all the people here acting like they know everything and exactly
how this was going to play out are the ones not using their brains.

There were explosives on board these planes and who knows how many others out there. We don't know the full attack details and their full terrorist itenerary, but it's safe to assume the worst. Let me guess, you're one of these guys after an attack happens that wonders why they didn't stop it sooner? That happened today. They stopped the attack before it happened. Plan thwarted.

You aren't disagreeing with me. You are acting like a terrorist attack wasn't stopped today, but the FACT is that it was.

"The source close to the investigation said the type of material found in the devices was PETN, a highly explosive organic compound belonging to the same chemical family as nitroglycerin. Just six grams of PETN is enough to blow a hole in the fuselage of an aircraft.
PETN was allegedly one of the components of the bomb concealed by Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, the Nigerian man accused of trying to set off an explosion aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 as it approached Detroit, Michigan, on December 25. AbdulMutallab is alleged to have been carrying 80 grams of PETN in that botched attack -- also believed to be the workings of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
By comparison, the source said the two devices found Friday contained multiple times more PETN. The source also said it appears the devices were designed to be detonated by a cell phone with the help of a smaller amount of a second unidentified explosive substance."

"multiple times" more than the underwear bomber had on him, he had 80 grams. Only 6 grams is required to blow a hole in the fuselage of an aircraft. This would have done more than harm a secretary.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2617272/posts

I’m skeptical of the timing of this ‘threat’. Obama’s serious on Jon Stewart’s comedy show earlier this week, his 3AM phone call comes in alas on the Friday before mid-terms, he’s holding a press conference perfectly timed for the evening news the Friday before mid-terms; and yet the stock market is flat or up a tick the Friday before mid-terms.

141. No, but I would like to see BP and Halliburton prosecuted. Is that too much to expect?
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 10:29 AM by leveymg
You can't find a single post where I said Obama was responsible for either the slow progress in plugging the blowout or in the cleanup. What I have said, however, is that the oil spill estimates cited by the gov't tended to reflect inaccurate information conveyed by BP, and that executives of that company and Halliburton should be criminally prosecuted, and if convicted, both companies' assets seized.

I do fault the Administration for not being more aggressive in imposing accountability for major corporate crimes, such as this.

More on point, I commend the Obama White House for allowing the intelligence services to arrest or foil would-be terrorists before they kill lots of people, unlike its predecessor, who told CIA briefers, "Okay, you've covered your ass." when informed that "spectacular" attacks by air hijackers on "landmark buildings" in NYC and DC was imminent.

I do fault Obama for not imposing accountability for that crime, as well.

If they had simply blown up the plane before landing, the Jewish synagogues would never have received what appears to be intended as a message specially directed to them. So, no. It was not a major attack.

52. There's no evidence that the intent was to blow up planes.
Reports so far are that they aren't sure how these packages were intended to be detonated, if they even could be at all.

Listen, if you want to compare this to attacks like 9/11, go ahead. Personally, I think it's unfair to do so.

It doesn't detract from the accomplishment to call this for what it is, the successful prevention of a small but real terrorist attack.

The goal of terrorism is disruption and fear. If we allow ourselves to get in the habit of assuming these incidents to be more dangerous than they are, the terrorists win.

This may turn out to be a "major" terrorist attack that was thwarted, but for now there's no evidence to suggest it was.

Major or minor depends on whether the packages were large enough to crash the planes, I'd have thought. Is that established yet?

On edit: Oops, they were addressed to a synagogue, so I guess they were designed to explode there, not in the planes. So I guess the major/minor adjective depends on the damage they could have done in a building. Enough to kill the person opening them, I presume, but may or may not be 'major'.

130. PETN
CNN did not have the info yet.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/10/29/security.concern/index.html?hpt=T1

The source close to the investigation said the type of material found in the devices was PETN, a highly explosive organic compound belonging to the same chemical family as nitroglycerin.
The source also said it appears the devices were designed to be detonated by a cell phone with the help of a smaller amount of a second unidentified explosive substance.

Who knew we had so many people working for the government posting on this thread. They must be right, because they have inside info that it wasn't a credible threat.

... because POTUS and VPOTUS are going to be out in the open carrying on with theirs."

Remember Bunker Boy? Remember "Be afraid, very afraid"? Remember Bush leaning over his podium getting practically orgasmic at the thought of revenge-killings?

Dear gods, what a difference.

121. Should he have ignored this? You have no idea what info the president had..
I'm a liberal and was against the war in Iraq, but I'm smart enough to realize that there are terrorist who would like to kill innocent people, Americans included. What would you be posting right now if the plane blew up, because Obama didn't act? Just be happy that there was no loss of life.

142. Because, of course, intercepting explosives is a political act
and nothing to do with wanting people not to be blown up, right?

Yes, terrorism alerts may sometimes be overused. But in this case there is proof positive that the weren't, in the form of actual bombs.

143. Worldwide Services -- Synchronizing the World of ???
I saw a photo in the paper this morning. I know the airplane said:

"Worldwide Services
Synchronizing the world of commerce"

And the caption read:

"Authorities respond to the United Parcel Service staging area at Newark Liberty International Airport where a cargo plane was
searched and a suspicious package removed yesterday"

But for some reason I saw this:

I really don't care if it's the same shit we got when dumbya was president as long as it works as well for the Democrats as it did for the Republicans AND GETS DEMOCRATS OFF THEIR ASSES OUT TO VOTE ON TUESDAY.

but the Saudis passed us a tip and UPS can track a package to the specific spot in the cargo hold. We actually did very little to avert this other than take credit.

Just because someone is less crappy than someone, doesn't make them good.

Anyone who thinks this was a good performance probably agreed with Janet's assessment that everything worked as planned with the underwear bomber...

135. Sorry, but this was not a major terrorist attack
The whole thing just doesn't make sense. Who would send packages with small amounts of explosives not even rigged to explode all the way from England and Dubai to Jewish synagogues in this country? What the heck was supposed to happen to them then? Were the "terrorists" going to pop by Temple and ask if their bombs had arrived yet? If someone really wanted to bomb a synagogue, it wouldn't be that hard to do with materials they could easily get here, and with much less risk of detection.

This is one of three things: A) A lame stunt by some bored Muslim teenage wannabe terrorists; B) A staged event by the governments of the United States and/or Israel, to keep people scared; or C) An attempt by actual terrorists to gauge air cargo security. In the latter case, the high profile given to this incident has done nothing but aid them.

144. Yeah sure, and it's just a *coincidence* this happens just before a major election...
Funny. Seems like this kind of "Terra! Terra!" was always rolled out just before big elections when W was prez, and most of us here at DU were smart enough to see through the transparent attempt to influence an election. But this time, because it's Obama, everyone seems blinded to the possibility that O's admin is wagging the dog by the same, tired old tail that Bush/Cheney/Rove did.

145. Obama's platform is not mainly focused on national security
So it doesn't follow that he would try to use a fake attack to drum up fear. If anything, an attack empowers repugs so your tinfoil point makes no sense.

Because as everyone knows, there are no real terrorists and everything bad is plotted by Cheney and is just a false flag operation so that Bush can yell Terra Terra Terra and take away all our rights and steal our Precious Bodily Fluids.
