4. It began with the idea that some Dems were disappointed in the progress over the last two years

and that would cause them to not vote in this election. So the MSM had a meme that they could run with for a period of time. That's how I see it.

5. it's pretty evenly distributed
read Michael Moore's letter, which is posted on DU somewhere, which he wrote about the boot stomping incident. it shows up when we don't phone canvass like we did before. or bring people to the polls, or knock on doors, etc.

7. They could never find one in my state (MN)
No matter how hard the pollsters looked.

I doubt MN was the only state without an 'enthusiasm gap".
