12. You know that after that hurricane many of the French
people in Martinique and Grenada moved to Trinidad and started planting cocoa in the hills of Santa Cruz.

8. Barbados is one of my favorite islands
and the Grenadines are so beautiful. I hope the area comes out the other side without much damage.

malaise, take care. I am glad you have some time to prepare.

We had a DUer that lived in St Lucia for a while, I have lost track of her, she caught me up a little on that island. Such pleasant places. Do you remember her? She may have come back to the states by now.

SUMMARY OF 800 AM AST...1200 UTC...INFORMATION

LOCATION...13.1N 60.1W
ABOUT 70 MI...115 KM SE OF ST. LUCIA
ABOUT 70 MI...115 KM E OF ST. VINCENT
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...70 MPH...110 KM/HR
PRESENT MOVEMENT...WNW OR 300 DEGREES AT 15 MPH...24 KM/HR
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...993 MB...29.32 INCHES

We have been listening to radio in Barbados and are shocked at the damage. Clearly no one in the Eastern Caribbean learned a damn thing from Grenada's devastation from Ivan. Lots of roofs off, houses damaged and trees and power lines down in Barbados. Collective memory has disappeared since Janet in 1955.
I'm betting that all standards will improve after this - imagine if Tomas was a major hurricane.

24. Latest report
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/Hurricane-Tomas-kills-12-in-St-Lucia
<snip>
Prime Minister Stephenson King had earlier said that an American visitor whose named was not disclosed, drowned on a north east coast beach while a 31 year-old woman died after her vehicle ran off the road and fell down a precipice.

King said he had taken an aerial survey of the storm damage and it is clear that there had been extensive damage.

“From the air, the southern town of Vieux Fort appeared to have received the brunt of Tomas’s fury and we will have to go into this area which was still blocked by landslides and virtually inaccessible to carry out a more detailed account of the damage,” he added.

Prime Minister King said that there were other persons missing from the town and that search and rescue teams were in the affected area.
-------------
Serious devastation in St Lucia.
Someone might tell me what the American tourist was doing swimming in the middle of a hurricane.

26. It's very, very bad in St Lucia
Here'a an email from a friend.
Severe landslides have cut off several sections of the island.
Soufriere looks like a war zone and help has only been getting to them today. It is cut off from all ends and the only route there is via sea. From all looks the damage there is the unimaginable. They're trying to get the stranded tourists out from Ladera, Jalousie, Anse Chastnet and Jade Mountains. It's just so hard. No communication lines so haven't been able to reach anyone down there.
