Cattle Antibiotic May Pose Human Health Risk
WTH, when your kid's in the hospital sick w/ some respiratory infection and it turns out to be impervious to the strongest drugs the docs have in their arsenal have a seat, take heart and remember back to that nice juicy feed-lotted grain-fed steak you had and how you drooled over how tasty it was, never giving a thought to the beeve that stood ankle deep in it and a few hundred of it's closest stressed out stranger's shit and piss for for months being force fed food it was never meant to eat and given antibiotics to keep it alive long enough to get to slaughter weight. but it was a damn good steak, huh? of course a lot of us think grass fed beef has a better taste and texture, but whatever floats your boat, right?

Cattle Antibiotic May Pose Human Health Risk

May 18, 2007 02:46 PM

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- There is growing concern about a powerful antibiotic the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to approve for use in treating sick cattle.

More than a dozen groups oppose the move, saying the drug's use poses a serious health risk for humans, according to NewsChannel 5 Consumer Investigator Jennifer Kraus.

When Joyce Williams enjoys a good steak, she knows exactly what's in it.

Williams is a cattle farmer.

"What you put into your cattle makes a difference in what you take in as a human being," Williams said.

Williams is also a nurse and one of many in the medical community, including the American Medical Association, who are concerned about the use of a strong antibiotic called Cefquinome for treating sick cattle.

1. This is why I've always thought it was futile to limit kids' exposure to prescribed antibiotics.
The problem isn't in the doctor's office. It's in the factory farms.

2. Vegetarianism is looking better and better every day!
Of course then you have to worry about pesticides...jeez, it's amazing we all don't have three heads and webbed feet!

4. you can still eat beef -
just find a local organic producer that raises free range grass fed animals. the meat is actually healthy for you when it's eaten in moderation and i find the taste and the texture of both beef and lamb to be superior to the grain fed feed-lotted factory crap. and just like getting your veggies from a
CSA or the farmer's market, you have a personal connection with the people who are raising your food. i know what's in my steak because i know where he ate and what he ate. it's a whole different way of looking at meat. it's great! i really love it. i don't advocate it for everyone, but i do advocate that everyone know exactly what they're eating and what their options are and make a fully informed choice, whether it's about meat from a CAFO or unlabeled GMOs in their food.

6. You know, that's a damn good suggestion!
Look, I have daughters and I am scared to death about what the hormones are doing to them. We have used organic milk for years and my oldest is vegetarian, but she still eats cheese which can contain hormones.

Yes, the organic beef/veggie producer is going to charge a bit more but, my god, isn't it worth it??

Good suggestion...I hope everyone reads it.

9. you can minimize the cost in a number of ways depending on what sort of
options are available to you. in some areas there a lot of CSAs that regularly supply beef/chicken /lamb as an an option or as a regular part of a share. or you can find a producer and*buy* a calf from her/him and have them raise it to slaughter or find a butcher that deals with the local producers and buy a side of beef or a !/4 steer. the butcher will tell you where it came from and the producers will be happy to meet you. They're rightfully proud of their product and with a phone call to set-up a time they generally love showing off their operation. if you split a whole steer with some friends/neighbors you can probably get a price that's not gonna be a whole lot higher than the supermarket crap. vacumn pack it and freeze it and you're set.

My rule is...I don't eat anything that takes care of it's babies.
A little fish here and there, but I am rethinking that one too.

Now if I could just figure out WHAT to eat since they have discovered
rocket fuel in our veggies and the possiblity that we won't
have any fruits or nuts if the bees disappear.

Perhaps snails and worms?
It's looking grim people, where the food supply is concerned.
