It is exhausting work to be so hateful as to be racist, so don't give the label just to anyone.

Will we practice that here?

3. Jon gave us so many lessons
(is that the word I'm looking for?) I'm going to need a few hours to digest it all.

I will say that I feel rejuvinated and the most hopeful I've felt in a year. Thank you, Jon and Stephen.

8. THere was a lot in that speech.
"I'm going to need a few hours to digest it all. "

I can understand that.

He also said that calling Juan Williams a bigot is insulting to real bigots.

I'm not so sure other DU'ers are going to think about it and digest it like you are. Everything posted about it is very positive, yet I know Juan didn't get much defense here, and the Tea Party...well, you know.

People have a tendency to hear what they want to hear, and maybe just some did hear it all and will change their outlook. Who knows.

5. i liked that, but... that being said, i think a lot of baggers work that hard to be racists.
i dont have to agree with stewart on all his conclusions to appreciate, value and enjoy his rally

7. So maybe we shouldn't call the Tea Party racist
, but when an individual member does something racist, label that individual member specifically as a racist.

I think that would be in-line with Jon's speech.

thrive on hate and racism, in my opinion, so no, i will not do as you suggest. they are what they are. i live in panhandle of texas. i have friends and family teabagging. i know who they are and why they are doing what they do. and yes.... racisim, sexisim, homophobia is a HUGE part of the anger.

stewart lives in NY and probably hangs with majority of liberals and is .... clueless

12. pretty sure that's my feeling too
I know too many racist teabaggers. It's like J Stew complaining this week on negative campaigning and using the example of Dems calling out Republicans for "banning women who were raped from getting abortions". Telling people actual positions your opponent has is not negative campaigning. If it's ugly or negative, that's their problem. Him saying that's equivalent to Repub ads saying Dems wanting convicted pedophiles to have Viagra is just intellectually dishonest and uninteresting.

Anti-abortion is a major Republican platform. It just is J Stew. Period.

But, I call em as I see em.

It's been in my best interest to spot racism and racists. I really don't need Jon Stewart to decide for me what or who is or is not racist.

Thank you. I DON'T love Jon Stewart but completely agree with the rest of your statement. And I'm sure he's a smart man, but I don't think that he is qualified to be an expert on spotting and/or living with racism anyway.

If Tea Partiers don't want to be labeled racists, then perhaps they should stop behaving as racists.

Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 07:23 PM by political_Dem
Because they sure don't give a damn about anyone else's feelings when expressing their bigoted filth overtly or subtly.

Therefore, Mr. Stewart's argument is nullified.

29. I'm STILL mad at Juan Williams
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 07:43 PM by CommonSensePLZ
Why? Because what he said WAS offensive, that's why people got offended. Some of my best friends over the years have been Muslims, males and females and like Jon said there's over a billion Muslims and it's illogical to assume they all, children and old people included, want to hijack and fly planes into our buildings.

IF he'd just apologized a day or so later everyone would've grudgingly accepted his fake apology, like we do all the rest.

Instead he took $2,000,000, attacked NPR, has not apologized and has not to the best of my knowledge told FoxNews to knock off their whining about how badly bigots are treated by society.

So, no, Juan Williams is still a douchebag in my eyes, fuck him, O'Reilly and the rest. See the article below for more reasons about why he was wrong beyond the issue of opinion:
