2. Homes For Our Troops
http://www.homesforourtroops.org/site/PageServer?pagename=VolunteerPositions

Learn About Homes for Our Troops
We are Homes for Our Troops, a national non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004. We are strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001. It is our duty and our honor to assist severely injured Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and to coordinate the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at NO COST to the Veterans we serve.

Note: An eligible Veteran or service member may receive a Veterans Administration Specially Adapted Housing Grant up to a maximum amount of $63,780. Homes for Our Troops’ assistance covers all costs over and above this grant and works closely with the VA to ensure that when our resources are combined, the home is provided at no cost to the recipient.

3. I would lean towards homelessness.
The returning troops will need someplace to live after they get out. Hopefully not under a bridge.

6. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans
Another organization I volunteer with
http://www.nchv.org/get_involved.cfm
"Over the past six years, the number of homeless veterans has been reduced by half, largely due to the collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the community- and faith-based homeless service providers that the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) represents. This administration's initiative to end homelessness among veterans in five years has signaled a new era for the homeless veteran movement, which has been well underway for two decades."

7. The VA Voluntary Service Programs
http://www.volunteer.va.gov/index.asp

Volunteer or Donate!
If you want to give your time and talents to support the care of America's veterans, or if you want to help, but don't have time, we have many ways you can help. Fill out our volunteer form and a local VAVS representative will contact you.

President's United We Serve
VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) has joined President Barack Obama’s United We Serve initiative. VAVS is committed to engaging American citizens in service during the summer months and provide lasting benefits to the veterans and communities in which they live through volunteer service. Follow the link above to see what projects may be available in your area. Or click on Volunteer or Donate to contact a VAVS Program Manager in your area.

Welcome Home Events
VA sponsors Welcome Home events around the country for returning military service members and their families. The events provide important information and guidance on accessing health care and other benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Follow the link above to see when a Welcome Home event is scheduled near you, or contact your local VA Voluntary Service office.

What are you worth?
Volunteers are an invaluable resource for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is impossible to calculate the amount of caring and sharing that VAVS volunteers provide to veteran patients. VAVS volunteers are a priceless asset to the Nation's veterans and to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

13. I'd put a word in for the American Red Cross........why because..
they got my niece home in 2 days for a family funeral. They worked the system & got her a flight. The military wouldn't have got her here in time.

15. I remember Donut Dollies *selling* donuts in Vietnam.
Yup, they were selling them. I never forgot that.

I know the Red Cross does some good, but selling donuts in a combat zone really turned me off.

16. that's great but I can't forgive them for hoarding 9/11 and Katrina money to use "down the road"
especially for what they didn't do for those in Nola, but could have and should have.
many of us would have never have given them money if we knew.

17. Give an Hour
https://www.giveanhour.org/skins/gah/home.aspx?mode=user

Our Focus
Our organization is currently focusing on the psychological needs of military personnel and their families because of the significant human cost of the current conflicts. Over 1.9 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf since September 11, 2001. Nearly 550,000 of these troops have been deployed more than once. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, as of May 4, 2010, a total of 5,444 American troops have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, 37,467 U.S. troops have been injured during these conflicts.
