I remember watching Bill Maher on Jay Leno when Adam Richman was the guest
and Bill's complete hostility towards him.

Adam is the star of The Travel Channel's "Man Versus Food".

I just hate that show, and knowing Bill's disdain for people who eat a lot of junk and restaurants that cater to people who eat said junk, I well understood Bill's hostility.

I mean who wants to watch a show in which a man travels around the country to see how much slop he can cram down his throat?

That show, IMHO, is just another type of program that promotes the dumbing down of America.

It seems all the channels are following suit. The History Channel, The Learning Channel, The Travel Channel -- all used to have great shows.

Now their lineups are full of crap that for the most part, only idiots want to watch (here I must exclude Anthony Bourdain's show from The Travel Channel's lineup).

"Reality" TV is going to be the death of this country.

1. Watching people cram slop down their throats can be interesting
if it's interesting slop in interesting places. For instance, I adore Andrew Zimmern and his willingness to shove creepy crawlies into his gob and then tell us what's actually pretty good, and he does it sober. Anthony Bourdain gives great background info on the places he goes to and he doesn't stick to four star restaurants with precious chefs--he eats the kind of street food I favor.

However, guys who go around to greasy spoons you can find in every town in the US and go for sheer quantity are disgusting. I share Maher's disdain, although I like to pretend I'd have more grace than to show it on national TV.

3. The Travel Channel is pathetic.....
World's best pigouts, world's best bathrooms, pizza wars, burger wars, Steak paradise, best buffets, haunted houses.....everything but places people actually want to visit.

10. I have to agree with Warpy
I occasionally watch Bordain and have Zimmermans show now and then, but the stuffing the face is disgusting. They actually tell you about the food and why etc.

The other so called reality shows I do not watch at all. I have enough trouble keeping the few braincells I've left motivated and moving.

Most of those so called reality stars I would not recognize em if I found them sitting out in my yard

11. I'm with you and Warpy, HillbillyBob. Reality TV is bogus mindfill.
TV, the drug of a nation, is a vast wasteland used for mind control. The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy pegged the warmongering liar Poppy for what he was back in '92.

5. doesn't Fox or at least Newscorp have a stake in many of these channels?
I am pretty sure they do History and Discovery. And what's that one that has Palin's Alaska on? TLC?
what a waste of air.

6. Most of the Discovery Outlets now have all reality shows and
they SUCK BIG TIME. Who in the hell want to spend time with the Kardashians. And all the other type of show. It is sickening. I have already deleted TLC from my remote because they are constantly showing Palins FAMILY VALUES FOR HER NEW SHOW. I could not stomach one more commercial. I used to love the nature shows and the history content but they have nothing about that any more.

I remember years ago when they ran a show about big business led by Prescott Bush trying to take over FDR's government. You know how they run the show in the morning and then about five or six hours again and then later again. They do this to most programming. Well I just happened to catch the morning show and didn't get it all. I set my reminder and guess what what was listed as the rerun on the menu never showed up
they had an entirely different show. I emailed them and wanted to buy the video and again GUESS WHAT...it wasn't available for sale.

And do you remember when George the first was in office and the were going to run a show about the Franklin conspiracy. Where they had a pedophile ring that had special access to the Bush white house. They were allowed to visit after hours. It was said they were touring, but the implications were something different. Before they showed it, the show was pulled. And there used to be articles all over the net about the Near Scandal you could GOOGLE and find them all over but after google came out to be predominately republican all the articles can't be found or, are so far back in the list people don't bother to check them out.

9. ever notice the remaining real learning type shows repeat segments ad nauseum
like anyone watching can't remember what they saw 2 minutes ago before the ads? it is irritating and makes me glad I have a dvr so I can ff through those review segments as well as ads.

I used to enjoy The Lonely Planet on Travel and sometimes still watch the shows with samantha brown.

some reality shows might do some good though like the various hoarding programs, intervention. addicted and obsessed. I hope it shows there are treatments that can help people even with severe problems and hopefully help friends and family of those with similar issues understand them better as well. I know there are some who just watch to mock the ill but I still hope that compassion and understanding will dawn eventually even in those people. People will mental illness didn't choose to be the way they are. I know I didn't.
