As Floridians vote, they need to remember Rick Scott's "abortion distortion"
Edited on Sun Oct-31-10 12:48 PM by madfloridian
The idea that this man will likely be our next governor scares the hell out of me. I find myself wondering when this state got to the point that someone like this could actually get this far along in an election.

Not only is he against Social Security, Medicare, and state pensions....he tells tales about his abortion stances.

From Mother Jones:

Rick Scott's Abortion Distortion

Rick Scott, the former health care CEO running as a Republican in the Florida governor's race, likes to tout his pro-life cred by pointing to a multimillion-dollar million lawsuit his company lost in 2003. Scott, the St. Petersburg Times reports, claims his former employer, Columbia/HCO,(HCA?) lost the suit because his hospital saved the life of a child, born prematurely with severe complications, even though the parents didn't want that. As Scott tells it, the story comes across as the ultimate pro-life narrative, an unwavering opposition to abortion even in the face of grave medical complications.

Except Scott's version is far from the whole story. According to the Times, when the mother of the child, Karla Miller, was rushed to hospital, the complications surrounding her 23-week-old were many. The odds the child would live anything resembling a normal life were slim, if the child survived at all. Facing this grave outlook, the Millers chose to terminate the pregnancy. But the hospital ultimately made that choice for them, and began trying to save the fetus' life. In the end, the child, named Sidney, survived—but only after a brain surgery and other drastic medical interventions that led to serious and life-altering complications, both for Sidney and her parents.

Today, the Times reports,

"Sidney is nearly 20 years old. She can't walk, talk, or eat on her own. She suffers from cerebral palsy, brain damage, seizures, and blindness. She requires constant care at the Miller home in Sealy, Texas, west of Houston.

Two years after her birth, the family filed a lawsuit against the hospital—not the doctors—for treating Sidney without legal consent. The Millers sought financial damages and expenses to cover the cost of her care after the family's insurance policy hit its $1 million ceiling."

Ultimately a court ruled that the Millers, not the hospital, were best positioned to make decisions like those surrounding Sidney's birth. The court awarded the Millers $43 million."

1. I pray that people don't vote for Scott out of anger towards Obama. This man is a total disaster.

3. He really is a disaster. Yet the GOP accepts him, and tears Crist down.
And the media here has been fairly kind to him, and not to Crist.

6. Why would anyone angry with Obama ......
for his right wing pro-corporate decisions vote for a RIGHT WINGER?

That's just a ton of FEAR-BASED thinking -- and it's very wrong.

Otherwise we have to believe that the public is insane --

4. More on Rick Scott and abortion and teachers
"He left no doubt about his conservative credentials Monday in answering Tiger Bay questions, saying that he would have signed a tough anti-abortion bill and the teacher bill that would have eliminated tenure, both of which were vetoed by Gov. Charlie Crist.

Teachers should have merit pay and be measured for performance, too, he said. Although he didn't agree with everything in the teacher bill, Senate Bill 6, he told the editorial board later in the afternoon, he would have signed it.

During that meeting, he again was asked about House Bill 1143, referred to by many as the "anti-abortion bill." The bill would require a woman seeking an abortion to have an ultrasound of her fetus and to be required to pay for it.

Scott was asked how he could reconcile his call for less government intervention and regulation and support the bill requiring women to look at the ultrasound.

"I'm pro-life... I believe if they see the sonogram, they won't have the abortion," he said."

There's only one way the right wing can rise -- political violence, stolen election --

and lies!

8. I have many neighbors who will vote for him.
And our regular handyman, maybe past tense now, heard me criticize Palin to my hubby when he was working. He asked what's wrong with Sarah Palin. And I let loose about it. He appeared to take it well, then we went on to Rick Scott. He doesn't like that he was involved with Columbia/HCA....but since he will vote as the teaparty says to vote he will vote for him.

He's an intelligent guy, retired from engineering. But that is how it is here.

9. There are people -- T-Baggers, evidently? -- voting for David Diapers Vitter ....

Understand quite well that right wing propaganda works --

but from what I've seen of elections from 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008 ....

those have all been anti-right wing -- anti-GOP.

Only steals carried off 2000 and 2004 -- IMO.

Keep your fingers crossed and my sympathies about that handyman!

:)
