David Broder goes off the deep end
from AlterNet:

David Broder Wants a Disastrous War with Iran to Boost the U.S. Economy
Posted by Joshua Holland on @ 10:42 am

Even by the perverse standards set by the opinion-shapers in the editorial pages of the Washington Post, David Broder’s offering today stands out as a unique blend of moral depravity and intellectual laziness.

Broder:

I know that Democrats have fallen into a peck of trouble and may lose control of Congress. But even if they do, Obama can still storm back to win a second term in 2012. He is that much better than the competition.

(...)

But if Obama cannot spur that growth by 2012, he is unlikely to be reelected. The lingering effects of the recession that accompanied him to the White House will probably doom him.

Can Obama harness the forces that might spur new growth? This is the key question for the next two years.

Broder then offers us a choice of two avenues by which the economy can grow. The first is just sitting back and waiting for the “business cycle” to turn.

In this regard, Obama has no advantage over any other pol. Even in analyzing the tidal force correctly, he cannot control it.

What else might affect the economy? The answer is obvious, but its implications are frightening. War and peace influence the economy.

So, what’s David Broder’s prescription for saving America?

With strong Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran’s ambition to become a nuclear power, he can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.

I am not suggesting, of course, that the president incite a war to get reelected.

No, of course not. Perish the thought. You’re suggesting that the U.S. push for a deadly conflict guaranteed to destabilize the Middle East further and put U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in grave danger in order to stimulate the economy, with the extra beneficial effect of getting Obama re-elected. What a grand plan! ............(more)

2. There is a third way.
Take all the borrowed $$ that would go into the war & use it to provide jobs, universal health care, and a whole new 21st century infrastructure for America.

The bad part, of course, is that Iran wouldn't be radioactive.

The good part is that we would be healthier, fully employed, and building toward the sustainable technologies that are ultimately the only way to maintain a healthy world ecosystem.

and a few places I can't even mention. He's nuts! Yes, that's right David ANOTHER war. We're rich we have all that surplus money just sitting in bank.

Please, someone take away their laptops, computers, pens, and paper - make them stop writing. Better yet, make them stop thinking.

Yesterday was such a great day. The Rally - today it's back to business as usual. I'm depressed. Screw it, I'll go clean something. The toilet sounds appropriate. :banghead:

Edited on Sun Oct-31-10 06:01 PM by Liberal Veteran
....lets just have round up all the unemployed and drop an H-bomb on them. (Edit: Yes this is sarcasm for those who can't detect it)

War as an economic solution is the moral equivalent of theft and murder.

8. War with Iran would destroy our economy.
Can anyone say $1000 barrel oil?

Iran will not just sit there and let themselves get bombed without them retaliating with every means in their military arsenal, at everyone that might be thought an enemy.

14. Here is an idea for the pea-brained, war mongering Repubs:
Spending money to BUILD things is a better economic stimulus, than spending money to DESTROY things (including peoples' lives).

Let's spend money on green energy instead of trying to steal the remaining fossil fuels, under the guise of the war on "terror".

When he thought that Bush had just as much intellect as Gore, and then tore Gore down repeatedly over the next year to prove it!!

Fucking joke of a reporter.
