Think it's possible he really does have confidence in them? Why do people think there is an ulterior motive to everything he says? So are you saying that after writing this book absolutely excoriating the political system and how it works, he is really working it himself?

I can support virtually any of the Dem candidates, any one of which is light years ahead of any potential successor to George W. Bush on the GOP side (assuming Bush steps down, and I think that's 50-50 at best), but Al Gore is the candidate for me.

Still 50/50, perhaps just a bit better odds that he will enter the race, IMHO.

His friendship with Lieberman is troublesome. But he handled that graciously.
And he still has that mushy moderate feel. But I've seen him on fire before.
All in all, he's one of the best for the job.

30. It's called loyalty and it is coupled with politics |
|
Unlike Bush, Gore has geniune friendships and he is loyal to them. He doesn't always agree with his friends on everything but, at least, Gore recognizes and acknowledges a person's good points.
As for Gore's not denouncing Lieberman, I've got a short and probably boring story. One of my best buddies when I was in law school was an Operation Rescue/RW/fundamentalist wacko. She still is. I had to work with her on a number of cases and for a semester I was her supervisor. As long as we didn't talk about some political issues (abortion and Bill Clinton) we got along great. She was and still is an environmentalist. She was and still is a strong advocate for kids. We had our disagreements but there were a lot of issues that we agreed upon. I needed her to get some of my work done and she needed me. I never compromised my values and she didn't compromise hers but we worked together. If I had spent most of our time together concentrating on our differences we wouldn't have been able to provide the best legal services to our Legal Aid clients that we did.
Gore is in the same boat. If he denounces Lieberman straight out he loses a valuable ally on the environment. If he denounces Lieberman he causes a rift in the Democratic party. But never forget that Lieberman's only strength right now is being a Democrat who is going for that John McCain maverick image. If Lieberman jumps ship, he loses his pivot position and drops out of the media limelight. Joe likes the lights and I think Gore knows that.

24. Once he says he's thinking about it he becomes "fair game" for the political media |
|
And as long as he stays out of the political arena his ideas have a better chance of being heard and discussed. It is like he is testing the waters for his ideas and his vision of what our government and our world can be. If he sees we, the people, have the will to act, I think he will definitely jump in.
He mentioned that some of his ideas seem radical. Larry said he didn't think so. I remember after Gore testified before the House and the Senate that there were pundits who said that Gore's testimony was evidence in their minds that Gore wouldn't run because his ideas were so radical. What did they consider radical? Reduction of payroll taxes offset by carbon taxes on businesses with rebates for reductions. Also, things like getting off the giant electric grids and creating regional grids. In other words, less chance for Enron to screw granny. It made sense to me at any rate.
He's asking a tall order though. He's asking the American public to care about its government and to get involved with it again. He's asking the American people to think about issues and decide for themselves. He's asking the hard media to do its job. Entertainment and celebrity news don't warrant whole days of coverage.
If he can sell his vision to the American people that the government is supposed to represent us, all of us, not just those who have lobbyists or with a particular religious afflilation, he might just get in.

26. What I find interesting about all of this. |
|
And you said it so well.
The things Al Gore is saying are things that are not going to be choices much longer. These are all things we are going to be forced into doing. The only thing radical about what he has said is that nobody has said them. Like dipping one's toe in the pool. Oh, it's cold. But then everybody is swimming.
America needs someone as stable and objective as him. I feel radical in comparison. I know the direction we must go, and I don't see any point in waiting. But then I'm not trying to win hearts and minds. He's playing a very well crafted role, or he's just genuinely a slow plodder. Either way, he's right for the job.

35. I've been wanting Gore as president since I read Earth in the Balance |
|
before that, in 1988, I thought he was kind of cute and wouldn't have minded looking at him as our POTUS for eight years. Between 88 and 92 I found a lot to like about Gore. Earth in the Balance was the tipping point for me. I've been helping to stave off a trafficway though a wetlands area since 1986. So far it hasn't been built. We've been in and out of court for years and one of the big stoppers was the CEQ under Clinton/Gore.
Anyway, when I read EITB I knew Gore was my man. He was one of the few who seemed to really understand the importance of not screwing up the environment for the sake of convenience. He's been one of the biggest influences in my life. Because of Gore I went to law school to help environmental causes (I do research, help write briefs and responses to environmental assessment/impact statements).
Personally, I think Gore's a bigger intellect than Clinton. He's like a figging sponge for knowledge. I think he's the best person we've got for the job. People around the world know Gore and we need to regain their trust to become a part of the world community again.

|
Edited on Wed May-23-07 02:00 AM by Gloria
delivered the usual political talk and seemed reserved; the second, when talking issues like Iraq and climate change, was intense, animated, and fully engaged.
The latter Gore is the Gore that Tipper knows, the one she says is free and the one she is referring to when she asks "why would he be willing to give that up to run for President?" (sic)
Al, do your thing and forget running again. Don't be tempted. You will revert to Gore #1 which is not making the best of use of your life.
