Edwards endorses involuntary servitude , it might as well be slavery. |
|
"One of the things we ought to be thinking about is some level of mandatory service to our country"
Mandatory service. So much for freedom. I can't believe that any Democrat would find this acceptable.
As far as I'm concerned , this climates Edwards from consideration even if he gets the nomination.

1. Are you against Mandatory education for children? |
|
Edited on Tue May-22-07 08:36 PM by Heaven and Earth
Seems like you'd have to be against that too, to be consistent.

10. Mandatory education is not the same as mandatory service. |
|
Mandatory education developed as a way of ensuring that citizens would be able to take care of themselves and govern themselves as adults. I think the notion of mandatory service is displaced militarism. I'm all for the government providing the opportunity for people to earn a living in service to their country. That's what firemen, policemen, teachers and sanitation workers do every day. (If you don't think municipal sanitation workers perform a vital service to their community, talk to someone who has been through a strike!)

That's why the overheated rhetoric displayed there is completely unwarranted.

There's a huge difference between involuntary servitude and limited service.
It's insulting you would even compare the two.

I don`t know the context of his statement, but I hardly think he meant slavery.

17. I absolutely favor VOLUNTARY National Service, with a lifetime reward such as a tax break |
|
Give up two years for the country (rebuilding infrastructure, fighting fires, building low-cost housing, etc.) and the Gubmint gives you a 3% deduction for the rest of your life.
Three years = 4% Four years = 5%
Yes, I pulled those numbers out of my ass, but it's a place to start the discourse.
Don't want to, or feel the need to serve your fellow countrypersons in any way? Fine. Forego the tax break.
Everyone wins.

You can make a case against Edward's call for mandatory service without equating it with slavery. That is inflammatory, pure and simple.

19. I support voluntary national service options. Would consider supporting mandatory service |
|
if the choices of service, reimbursement and training were comparable with the private sector as far as possible. Voluntary service ought to have the same consideration, imo, as well.
One model is the requirement for government financial assistance for medical training that a doctor serve a length of time in rural/under-served areas in lieu of the med school tuition funding.
It's worth a look.

Would more soccer Moms pay more attention to the world if their children were required to possibly serve in the military?
