Reality check? This country is pretty much screwed regardless.
Let's look at the situation we find ourselves in:

-Our media is owned by corporations.

-Our major political parties are owned by corporations and special interests (true, this applies to one party more than the other)

-The majority of our electorate has no interest in educating itself about the problems our country faces; opting instead to be spoon fed their beliefs by whomever is able to make them feel angry/safe/in control, etc.

Can you really imagine Americans taking to the streets en masse when the government programs they rely on are slashed, their jobs sent overseas, etc.?

We've become a nation of plentiful (media-fueled) opinions, but little action.

And I'm not sure how a Democracy survives that.

I'm also not sure how a nation fixes this, but I'm pretty sure the answer doesn't lie in watching the pendulum swing between two political parties with questionable intent/ability to change anything at all.

Thoughts and opinions are welcome, as always.

1. Let's give Obama's bipartisanship a chance!
The Democrats have led the way on compromise and reaching across the aisle.

Tonight voters have taken up the call

It's all good!!1111

2. I don't know if the Empire can be saved -- perhaps when it implodes into separate repbulics
...here in North America...

Well. They won't all be republics, I guess.

4. Yeah, it's almost hard to trace the beginning of the end at this point.

But the finishing blows have been pretty obvious.

ETA: Don't get me wrong, I love this country in a abstract hard-to-describe way. I'm just losing hope for it. If we could only get people to actually THINK again...

6. Thinking is hard
And for all their precious "hard-working" self-image, when it comes to the intellectual realm, Americans are bone-lazy.

It's the land of TV reality.

8. Then I guess this government is exactly what "we" deserve.
Sad for a country that once held so much promise.

And I really do feel sorry for the idiots out there who are losing their paychecks, their homes, their livelihoods who are freaking out and truly believe the black man, brown man and government programs/tax cuts in their favor really are to blame.

12. It is a great country (or was), which makes the whole situation that much more sad.
If only a rain of meteorites and space junk would destroy all our satellites. If people were even just forced to READ their political clap-trap of choice it would make an improvement.

10. The more I watch how "the masses"
behave the more I feel "we" get what we deserve. If we're not busy being easily manipulated, we're busy being willfully ignorant.

11. I think any resemblance to a democracy is purely coincidental....

...... It's been a Kabuki democracy for a while now, but even that facade is falling. Citicorp's dreams of a plutonomy have come true......And the braindead Teabagger types don't even realize how they're enabling it.
