A mass grave has been discovered in a house near a Sunni mosque in the southern Iraqi city of Mahmoudiya, the Sunni Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) said on Sunday.

The grave was discovered Friday by joint US-Iraqi forces at the al-Sadeq al-Amin mosque in Mahmoudiya, 30 kilometres south of Baghdad. The mosque and its imam's house had been seized a few months ago by a militia linked to the Shiite Mahdi army, an affiliate of the Shiite Sadr movement led by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

In a statement published online the AMS accused the Mahdi army of "using the mosque for torturing the innocent and killing them after kidnapping them."
