Bush: bin Laden ordered non-Iraq attacks

By DEB RIECHMANN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Seeking to rally support for the war, President Bush is pointing to U.S. intelligence asserting that Osama bin Laden ordered a top lieutenant in early 2005 to form a terrorist unit to hit targets outside Iraq, and that the United States should be first in his sights.

The information, which Bush was to cite Wednesday in a commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was declassified by the White House on Tuesday. It expands on a classified bulletin the Homeland Security Department issued in March 2005.

The bulletin, which warned that bin Laden had enlisted Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, his senior operative in Iraq, to plan potential strikes in the United States, was described at the time as credible but not specific. It did not prompt the administration to raise its national terror alert level.

Bush, who is battling Democrats in Congress over spending for the unpopular war in Iraq, will highlight U.S. successes in foiling terrorist plots and use the intelligence to argue that terrorists remain a threat to Americans, said Frances Fragos Townsend, the White House homeland security adviser.

Oh wait, this story is two years old.....never mind.....

2. Well, at least he was alive in 05. Maybe.
I believe bush uses the magic 8 ball. "Is Osama among the living"? Magic 8 Ball: 'All signs point to yes".

7. He hasn't been charged, by the FBI or CIA.
There is no official hunt for him. Switch bush's name to Clinton and you'd have to hang him from the nearest cherry tree.

9. Nine US warships enter Gulf
Nine U.S. warships carrying 17,000 personnel entered the Gulf on Wednesday in a show of force off Iran's coast that navy officials said was the largest daytime assembly of ships since the 2003 Iraq war.

U.S. Navy officials said Iran had not been notified of plans to sail the ships, which include two aircraft carriers, through the Straits of Hormuz, a narrow channel in international waters off Iran's coast and a major artery for global oil shipments.

Rear Admiral Kevin Quinn, who is leading the group, said the ships would conduct exercises as part of a long-planned effort to reassure regional allies of U.S. commitment to Gulf security.

16. The mere fact that this...
...story IS as old as it is, and that * is exhuming it in 2007 to use it as justification for the presence of US troops in Iraq is utterly absurd.

Anyone with any brains whatsoever should be able to see through this ploy...

And I won't even discuss this waffling of the congress, when the chimpinator dug his heels in over the Iraq spending bill. I would suppose that this is the method he used his entire life to get what he wants... Unfortunately it still works...

18. 2001?
But I thought he had said Bin Laden was operating in Iraq with Saddam and that is why we invaded Iraq??? Of course he was setting up cells in Iraq in 2005; we saw to it that all the terra-ists flooded to Iraq once the war began. So why is this new 'intelligence' of any importance at all. Oh, that's right- they all are booking flights from Baghdad to NYC now to follow us home.
