The real blowback of the Citizens United decision begins today
and jumps into full effect in January. We're miles behind those who wanted this decision the most--I suggest we start thinking about real, workable ways to fight it and to engage Joe and Jane SixPack. We discovered that some in the Democratic Party ARE paying attention to us--that's a very good (but miniscule) start right there.

No doubt you've seen the FUD commercials way too much already (even my 13 year old laughed at the "Scary China" ad) but I don't think we've seen anything yet. It's gonna get much, much worse.

Care to discuss?

1. Rove's planning to keep running ads for the rest of the year.
That's what Olbermann has reported.

Dem messaging needs to be strong and unified.

They need to try to get the Disclose act through in Lame Duck. It won't get passed but they need to try and talk it up 24/7

3. Exactly--time to put the Republicans on the defensive about that one.
We need ads about that one on our side--Joe and Jane don't know and won't care until they do.

2. I think one of the easiest ways to engage the SixPacks is to tell them that
the tidal wave of attack ads and robocalls they've just had to endure were almost certainly paid for with shadow financing and 2012 will be even worse if we don't do something about it. They may not give a crap that businesses are buying their politicians and elections, but they sure as hell are sick of the ads.

5. One of the Few Places Bipartisanship MIght Actually be Workable
is an attempt to pass a constitutional amendment either limiting certain kinds of contributions or else removing the personhood of corporations.

Lots of populist right-wingers agree with populist Democrats on this issue. It's a tall order, but with the Supmeme Court setting a precedent, it might be the only way.

8. Republicans will do nothing to diminish their fundraising advantage.
Sorry to say, but those Tea Party extravaganza's weren't paid by the rubes that attended. Big Business has their Party and Mass Media channel. The only winners were the top 5% who'll get their taxcuts extended. Nothing else really matters to this Party. The bottom 95% will continue to slide down the SOL curve....and that includes the rubes who can't seem to figure this basic fact out.

12. No, Neither National Party Would Initiate This
it would absolutely have to be a grass-roots-initiated effort at the state level.

6. And the amazing part is that yesterday, the American people...
completely endorsed the Citizens United decision. This is
probably the blackest day for our American democracy
since December 12th, 2000.

9. today also begins the real consequences for failing to prosecute the Bush administration....
War crimes tribunals would have broken the back of the Republican party for at least a generation. AND been the right thing to do for justice's sake.

10. Agree with the above. This can (and will) bite both parties squarely in the ass.
They need to put aside todays "political currency" as they see it and nip non-person personhood with a Constitutional amendment NOW.
