"New reality: Obama, GOP talk compromise, conflict" -- On with the Compromising!!!
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent – 7 mins ago

WASHINGTON – A chastened President Barack Obama signaled a new willingness to yield to Republican demands on tax cuts and jettisoned a key energy priority on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after he and fellow Democrats absorbed election losses so severe he called them a shellacking.

(snip)

Sounding more conciliatory than in the past, the president said he was open to compromise with Republicans on their demand for an extension of all of the Bush-era tax cuts due to expire on Jan. 1, including those that apply to upper-income earners.

(snip)

Obama also virtually abandoned legislation, hopelessly stalled in the Senate, that includes economic incentives to reduce carbon emissions from power plants, vehicles and other sources.

What else can we possibly do?

Now is not the time for fighting!! (Neither were 2008 and 2009 -- the votes weren't there!!)

Now is the time for compromising!! (So were 2008 and 2009 -- we have to reach across the aisle and everything in the Senate requires 60 votes!!)

And as everyone knows, the BEST way to avoid a fight is to surrender before it even starts!!

Hurray!!! :

:sarcasm:

6. Okay, so...

if you have some evidence that Obama is standing firm on letting the Bush tax windfalls for the wealthy expire, or is not willing to let go of incentives based on emissions, let us know.

14. What evidence does the AP story give that he is not?

"My goal is to make sure we don't have a huge spike in taxes for middle-class families," he said. He omitted mention of his campaign-long insistence that tax cuts be permitted to expire on upper-income families. The issue produced pre-election skirmishes in Congress and frequent disagreement during the campaign.

That he didn't say something in what basically was a generalized press conference to make some concilatory noises? That's their evidence?

My only point is we need to read these AP stories critically - they made a conscious decision a few years ago to start editorializing in their news stories, This was done under Ron Fournier who headed the political bureau. He interviewed for a job on the McCain campaign and was friendly with Karl Rove. He's gone now but they are still following his model in political reporting.

3. How the fuck could he sound MORE conciliatory than in the past?
He doesn't need to sound more conciliatory. It's time to play chicken with these motherfuckers.

This is just more bullshit from the AP.

11. To the contrary of what?
I'm not disputing any facts, just stating opinions

Obama has been too conciliatory for the past two years IMO, he doesn't need to be more so under the current circumstances.

And it's also my opinion that the Associated Press consistently slants its coverage to belittle Democrats and their policies.

So that if the villagers turn on you, you still keep going.

Because nobody takes my beer and travel money.

If they surrender, it is only their loss, although most of them are just following what they joined long ago, they are not surrendering, they are following what they always followed.

Why surrender, seen that end.

Although the new establishment allows for a different rule set played back against them.

9. Maybe he assumes they aren't interested in compromising, and thinks he could put the obstructionist

12. Cap and trade is a stupid bullshit idea
And I do not want to see it happen. It's not been proven to work and it's a giveaway to Wall Street (guess who gets to sell the carbon credits?).

The problem is devising a decent climate bill with a party that is 80% full of global warming deniers.
