If (and when) the spineless Congress capitulates to der Chimpenfuhrer's insistence that he gets to play war for as long as he wants without Mommy being allowed to tell him to come inside for dinner, then Congress will have bought the war.
It'll be THEIR war too, if (and when) they decide that re-election prospects are a more important consideration than doing not only what is right, but doing what the vast majority of the citizenry of the United States ELECTED them to do: put a stop to this utterly insane misadventure in Iraq.
Pelosi put a down payment on the war with her asinine "impeachment is off the table" remark, as I write this Harry Reid is writing out the check, and before the ink is dry, the Congressional Democrats will have bought this war. Sure, not all of them will cave, I feel confident that at least ONE of my Senators (Robert C. Byrd) will not lay down with the proverbial devil, but if enough Democratic Congressmen and Senators do (and they will), then they will have bought this war. It will be theirs. Bush may still own the bulk of it, and rightly so, but the Democratic party will have bought a major stake in this war. Kind of like a timeshare... And who the hell is stupid enough to buy a timeshare?
So what will happen once the Democrats have bought their very own war, one that they and they ALONE will be responsible for waging? Yes, I know, let me explain... This is still, at its heart, Bush's war. However, six plus years on, it is eminently clear that it is unwise in the extreme to let Bush do whatever the hell he wants. A more foolhardy course of action does not exist. And if (and when) the Democrats pass Bush's "timetable-free" funding bill, then he can (and will) do whatever the hell he wants with unimaginably disastrous consequences. But I digress... Back to the question, "What will happen if (and when) the Democratic party buys into this war?"
Well, you can expect to see a lot of the anti-war rhetoric evaporate from the pronouncements and indeed, the very thoughts of our Democratic elected officials. The more substantive criticisms will still be discussed, of course, but the discussion will be reframed as just a "problem to solve", or a "hump to get over", inevitably by pissing away more money, and slaughtering thousands wholesale in pursuit of an objective that never existed in the first place, let alone be possibly be achieved.
Underarmored troops and vehicles?
Just a stumbling block.
Constant escalation of sectarian violence?
Nothing but a bump in the road. (The road to a victory that cannot be won)
Becoming a pariah nation, the Iraqi diaspora, inflaming the Muslim world against us, causing chaos in an already unstable region?
They'll get over it. We've just got to wait them out.
These sentiments, the rhetoric of the Republicans, will be slowly adopted by OUR politicians, albeit in less outrageous form. It's an inevitability that once the Democrats buy this war they will then try to justify their purchase. After all, who the hell signs on to something for any other reason than perceived benefit? And when there IS no benefit, well, you have to obscure that fact.
So suffice it to say that I'm disappointed, dismayed, and above all RIGHTEOUSLY PISSED about the news coming out of Washington. I didn't work my ass of for five years, give or take, to elect Democrats who by and large are utterly unwilling to do the job that they were chosen for. It was no secret that our capturing Congress in the last election was due to widespread opposition to Bush's war, and it's no secret today. But if the Democrats in Congress surrender to the abominable will of Bush, it won't just be his war any longer. It won't just be the war of the Congressional Democrats, either.
It will be an AMERICAN war, both in appearance and substance. And that, my dear friends, will be the final nail in the moral coffin for this once great nation.
