A Liberal’s Fantasy Bloodbath

A Liberal’s Fantasy Bloodbath

What an election! As the returns rolled in, we all saw what we already knew from the polls was going to happen—it was a slaughter. The Democrats now not only control both Chambers, but they have surpassed the magic number of 60 in the Senate!!! Most of the pundits are attributing this wave of enthusiasm for the Democrats to the overwhelming popularity of the President. Throughout the run-up to the election, polls showed that he earned very high favorability ratings, especially from Democrats and Independents. If there is anything this President knows how to do, it is to energize his base!

Undoubtedly, the President’s immense popularity comes in part from the strong leadership he exerted on the health care bill. As Americans all over the country began reaping the benefits of the public option -- making health care affordable to all citizens -- the Republicans message of repealing “the socialist agenda” left many wondering, “And why would I support that? I can finally afford to see a doctor.” The health care bill also mandated the immediate closing of the Medicare prescription “doughnut hole” (thus the historically unprecedented support of the elderly for Democrats this election). As 72 year old Joe Parelli told one CNN correspondent, “I used to have to choose between my medications or groceries. Now I don’t have to live with that kind of stress. I like what Obama has done.” Although the Republicans tried to kill the bill with their cries of “death panels” and “socialist health care”, their message never really congealed. This was mainly due to the swift response from Robert Gibbs, “The public option is good for competition in the health care industry, and competition is always good for capitalism.” After that, the Republicans just basically looked liked the obstructionists they really are.

Once in office, President Obama remained true to his campaign promises and began instigating change. He ordered the immediate closing of Guantanamo. He urged Congress to repeal DOMA and DADT, stating that such hate and bigotry has no place in the United States. He then invited Lt. Dan Choi to the White House signing, gave him the pen and then personally re-enlisted him into the armed services.

Putting Dr. Howard Dean in charge of Health and Human Services was instrumental to the success of the recently passed health care bill and delighted Obama’s liberal base. After Wall Street crashed, Obama consulted with top economists such as Stiglitz, Roubini and Krugman. His swift and unprecedented bailout was staggering, but appears to have worked because very few Americans lost their jobs. He also urged Congress to put a much-needed cap on top management’s pay and limited the banker bonuses of those who received the bailout. As former AIG employer Lisa Strom said in a New York Times interview, “I lost my entire life savings, why should they get to walk away with it?”

Then, as foreclosures soared, Obama called for an immediate moratorium on them and forced the banks to write down the principal on all mortgages. He also demanded an immediate investigation of the banks and their shady mortgage dealings.

Obama has also been a staunch advocate for renewable energy resources, and steadfastly against off-shore drilling. In fact, the BP Gulf oil disaster occurred right after Obama publicly reiterated his opposition to drilling in coastal areas.

Throughout these first 2 years in office, Obama’s message as leader of his party has been clear, concise and articulate. He never let the electorate forget that it was the Republicans that got us into this mess in the first place. On top of that, Robert Gibbs can’t stop gushing about liberals, “What kind of world would we live in if there were no progressives? They are the ones who keep this nation moving forward.” (It’s almost embarrassing.)

But perhaps Obama’s most important move in this election cycle was his swift leadership in creating legislation to stop the Citizens United ruling from standing. One can only imagine the kind of corporate money that otherwise would’ve flowed into this mid-term election if he hadn’t.

Probably the only area where Obama failed has not been his fault – the desire for bi-partisanship. He came into office hoping to change the tone in Washington, but the constant obstructionist behavior by the Republicans made such lofty goals near to impossible. For that, he cannot be blamed, as witnessed by this most recent mid-term bloodbath.

1. If only this was the actual history...
Being a President is extremely difficult as the only way to train for it is on the job. Obama learned a lot during his first two years and now should be able to become the President we all hoped for.

17. What we have here is a failure in communications ...
which is indeed similar to wet powder.

President Obama On ’60 Minutes’: ‘Leadership Isn’t Just Legislation’

NEW YORK (CBS) — After a suffering a “shellacking” in the midterm elections, President Obama acknowledges what many have seen as his chief weakness – failing to sell the importance of several legislative milestones to the American people.

“I think that’s a fair argument. I think that, over the course of two years we were so busy and so focused on getting a bunch of stuff done that, we stopped paying attention to the fact that leadership isn’t just legislation. That it’s a matter of persuading people. And giving them confidence and bringing them together. And setting a tone,” Mr. Obama told 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft in an exclusive interview set to air Sunday.

“Making an argument that people can understand,” Mr. Obama continued, “I think that we haven’t always been successful at that. And I take personal responsibility for that. And it’s something that I’ve got to examine carefully … as I go forward.”

2. If Obama had shown such bold leadership democrats would have picked up midterm seats!
It's a shame ALL of that was within Obama's control, but he chose not to pursue them. Great story!

8. There have been profound and monumental times in this country when it's history is at an apogee,
when the course of human events align and create unequaled opportunities. Unfortunately, many of these rare times are squandered by lesser participants. Chief among those was the horrific tragedy of 9/11. For one magic moment almost all of the world was united in shock and grief. The United States had the opportunity to truly lead the world into a brighter, more equitable future for all countries and significantly curtail worldwide terrorism and invigorate the international rule of law. Sadly, the illegal and immoral Bush*/Cheney* administration did none of these things, instead choosing to abandon principles of justice and lawfulness and descend into an orgy of war crimes unprecedented in our history.

We had another of those monumental times with the election of President Barrack Obama. This country was ready to throw off the yoke of Cheney*/Busy* and regain it's soul and honor. We had the opportunity to punish war criminals and regain the respect of the world. We had the opportunity to radically re-align the distribution of wealth and fairly provide basic heath care for all citizens. We had the opportunity to chart this country away from it's looming colision with American facism and reinstate basic human liberties for all citizens. And sadly, we did not.

9. And we would have magic pills that turn shit into ice cream!
And world peace would break out after all religions agree that all the others are right, too!

And then we could get a car that runs by hydroponically growing marijuana!

Oh if only, IF ONLY!

12. He did urge Congress to repeal DADT, and got it through the House and Senate Armed Services cmte
both of which were in doubt before he intervened.

In the end, it failed because the Republicans filibustered it.

I'll always wonder why the ran from an obviously successful path and ended up squandering two years and complete control of our government.

23. A comedian who has since left this mortal coil,
said that each President since Kennedy gets a meeting first thing with the CIA. No discussion, just the Macgruder film in a loop. After about an hour, they say, "any questions".

It's as valid as anything else, when one chooses to put on that tinfoil cap, ya know?

18. So those "blueprint" for success betrays
that you had your own horses you were ready to ride with in this administration, and without them it was the highway for you.

It also betrays a remarkable lack of political intelligence. It fails to mention Republican and Senate blue-dog Democratic intransigence in any meaningful way other than the pipe dream of a George W. Bush style Obama becoming our "The Decider".

It betrays that you have NO IDEA how hard this President has worked his first two years in office, that the House jumped through hoops to get OUR liberal agenda passed, and then failure(s) by the Senate (which Obama had no cards to deal with) required compromise if we wanted anything resembling progress AT ALL. And we did it. Via some extremely difficult maneuvering.

It is this fact that so turned off the ideological base (not to be confused with the pragmatic liberal base) that they then turned on the President, anything resembling tooth-gnashing from his staff (Rahm -- hey I thought we wanted the President to be more forceful) or the economic advisors brought on to try and stave off a depression, and knee-capped him when it came to progress on any of the issues we care about. Because Krugman said so. Or whomever the flavor of "progressive" blogosphere of the week said everything he was doing was a travesty.

And then so much of the youth vote stayed home that it helped us lose the very house that made all of the progress you and I care about, and rendered their achievements vulnerable.

And we had the folks at FireDogLake working with Grover Norquist. WTF did you expect to happen when our team was happier working with theirs, and serving as a proxy to tear down the very message you now scream Obama himself should have been screaming about, be-damned the Republicans?

Seriously. Get over yourselves, you don't know a damned thing.

Because it has nothing to do with what was written in the OP. Curious.
