McNulty: I'm No Liar .... just released statement
McNulty: I'm No Liar
By Paul Kiel - May 23, 2007, 4:42 PM
During her testimony today, Monica Goodling pointed the finger squarely at Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, saying that he had not been "fully candid" in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee about his knowledge of White House involvement in the U.S. attorney firings (McNulty had earlier pointed the finger at Sampson and Goodling for not informing him of the White House's role). Goodling laid out four key areas where she said McNulty hadn't told the whole truth in her written statement (pdf) to the committee. Perhaps the most serious allegation she made was that McNulty had told the commmittee that he didn't have any knowledge of how Tim Griffin, Karl Rove's former aide, had come to be appointed the U.S. attorney for Little Rock. In fact, Goodling said, she'd told him that the White House had been involved in Griffin's appointment all along.

Here's a statement just out from McNulty, via the Department of Justice:

“I testified truthfully at the Feb. 6, 2007, hearing based on what I knew at that time. Ms. Goodling's characterization of my testimony is wrong and not supported by the extensive record of documents and testimony already provided to Congress.”

4. Of course! And no politicians lie!!
Thanks, McNulty, for clarifying all this for us. Now I'll just change my mind.

I used to think that it was the nature of the beast; that politicians and lying had gone hand in hand for centuries. But, thanks to you, I stand corrected!

I think I'll just go back to my tv, or maybe take a nap. It's a good time to sleep, because you and the rest of the government are protecting me.

Some interesting reading:

6. Not sure either McNulty or Goodling could be considered "politicians"
Political, for sure, but I don't think either of them gets elected to office..Not to say however your point isn't made either way.

7. They need to get McNulty, Goodling and Sampson before them at the same time
And then focus on Tim Griffin and who exactly came up with the list.

12. Apparently he used to be one of us...
According to wikipedia, as sourced from WP:

"McNulty started his public career in 1983 'as a Democrat and counsel to the House ethics committee, eventuall bec a Republican....'"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McNulty

Still, I'm inclined to believe him.

14. Short and unconvincing statement by McNulty if you ask me
Sorry but Goodling just laid a big fat turd on his doorstep and all he's got to respond is 2 sentences??

So the question becomes has McNulty already been turned, providing the cover for the WH?

Or will he tell more about what he knows. Goodling's testimony clearly shows McNulty knows more: whether he gathered it by being a party to the crimes, or whether he gathered it on the side, he's a player.

All in all though, McNulty's statement is pretty pathetic.

Goodling states that McNulty was lying.
He states that he was telling the truth. Make them prove their statements. Documentation should be available to decide this.

21. I'd suggest just acting on the Karl Rove and Harriet Miers subpoenas.
There are some people I'd like to ask a question or two.

I also like the idea someone posted above: have Goodling, Gonzales and McNulty there testifying together.

25. the Conyers committee has the right
to call in both Gonzales and McNulty. They also now have good reason to call in Rove, based on her testimony.

Goodling's testimony - which included all three of them - yesterday, demands that they "clarify" and answer questions about the discrepancies between her testimony and their stories.

Her testimony is given a good bit of credence because of her immunity. It's hard to imagine her testifying to even one word about Rove, McNulty or Gonzales without having had immunity.

Paraphrasing BHJ; buckle up...

18. Does immunity count if she perjured herself?
From what I've seen on "Law and Order," it does not. Immunity is revoked.

23. "Law and Order" is correct here.
Not only are you not immune against perjury, it will usually get the deal rescinded.

26. Conyers confirmed that she is not immune if she perjures herself
And that the order stated that she must answer all the questions. Shne would be pretty stupid to lie. Giving non-answers is one thing, but lying is another.
