We did NOT send them to Washington to fold up lke a cardboard suitcase the first time they got a little bit of pushback from Georgie.

Chicken feathers all without one gut, as Les McCann so eloquently stated it.

Fucking cowards.

I'm with you on this. As outraged as I am (the OP sums that up quite well), I will be very interested in seeing the role call on this one.
Last night, one of the Mods took down a post/mock poll way calmer than this one.
Hopefully, an opinion tidal wave is building.

If you compare this future list of Congressmen to the list of those who voted for cloture on the Alito nomination and for the MBNA Credit Card bill - it would be damn similar.

I may be wrong.

Repukes, and they will do what they are told. The more time goes on, the more I am convinced that this is just a dance they do for us, appear different, but when push comes to shove, they walk in lockstep with the sociopath in chief.

Ko said it so well tonight, nothing would have been taken from the troops if the dems went against this tryant in office, bottom line is as KO said, if anything was taken away from the troops it would have been by bush and company and no one else, there was no reason to back down, I cannot for the life of me understand why unless blackmail or threats are involved...

Why in hell did Carl Levin and Jim Webb vote against Feingold/Reid's bill, while Schumer and Clinton voted for it?

What the hell happened to Jim Webb? Wasn't it just a few months ago that he rebutted Bush's State of the Union speech by saying Congress would "show Bush the way" if necessary?

What is happening to the Democratic leadership? Anybody got a rational explanation?

they're dealing with the political realities. Believe it or not, there was no mandate to end the war today, or to impeach Bush.

We have very slim majorities in both houses - that's reality.

22. But could the political stategy have been more pathetic?
They had to know how this would turn out a long time ago: bush would veto and the votes wouldn't be there to override. Couldn't our leadership have figured out a better way to get their point across without looking like totally feckless losers?

What brilliant strategery! :sarcasm: Strengthen your rival and make yourselves look weak and spineless. They had to know every newspaper in the country would paint this as capitulation and a betrayal of the base. Are they following bush's lead and lowering our expectations???

If you had, you'd understand the desire of some to stop it NOW. And fuck a whole bunch of "political considerations."

If YOUR son or daughter was to be the next one to die, or to spend the rest of his or her life as a cripple, "political considerations" might be much less important to you.

War is obviously abstract to you. It's REAL to a lot of other people.

And if they did not vote for the bill, what would happen? Is it a given that the war would end? Since Chimpy would still be President, that's hard to see happening. Other posts today were saying that without the funding, he could still have money for the troops, so that cuts both ways.

Sounds like a pretty good "mandate" to me. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2752103&mesg_id=2753090">Newsweek, Jan 27, 2007)

There is only ONE way to give the public its wish. Impeach Bush and Cheney.

Since "impeachment" is a subject that is apparently taboo for the MSM polls, Newsweek's question is as close as we get on the subject.

Even if "the numbers" weren't there, leadership doesn't mean "find a parade and get in front of it." The "mandate" is their Congressional oath to "support and defend." Take the lead. Trust the electorate to do the right thing. That's what America is all about -- the Constitution and the People's Government.

I grant myself some solace in knowing that they would behave exactly as they did (and getting reamed 10 times from Sunday here for trying to tell folks), but the fact that so many put so much hope in them is what truly saddens me.

Even worse is the fact that they are willing to do it again come November.

The ugly truth is that there is money - lots of it -to be made from this war, and those that pay lip service to the dead are doing just fine, thank you.

Doing a little checking into Pelosi's net worth (and where it comes from) will not be pretty.

The Pub Evidence is Nauseating

They delve into BS on a high level

They twist Reality into Fantasy

Counterproductive for the Long Term...They avoid the Realm of LONG TERM(HOMO SAPIENS....)

Logic tells us we should be looking for options/systems to take Mankind into the Far Far Future.

We are COWARDS to LOGIC/REASON/FUTURISM/COURAGE

We lack the COURAGE TO LISTEN....Hear it, smell it, feel it, see it, taste it.....Believe it

We lack the Courage to find ways to advance our way of living/life for the Nation.

We have Cowards in both Parties....but in Reality ... I give the edge to the Dems re COURAGE...

They have what it takes to vote what they think is right/best for the Peeps.

What DID happen today did not surprise me in the least, given the
fact that both sides of the aisle are OWNED by the global corporatists.
Think about it- if you were in their shoes, would you give
up your gazillion dollars in order to represent we, the new third world people?

Hmmm....let's weigh the options given what THEY KNOW about the future.

-Global warming
-Water shortages
-Energy shortages
etc...

Think they are not going to take care of their own?
All debate and grand standing on the part of the dems is theater
at this point, meant to placate and stave off the masses of
PISSED OFF citizens who are watching their dream of America
become a nightmare.

WE are on our OWN people.

56. I hate to admit I'm not surprised
Does that mean I don't belong here?

I believe in the idea of Democracy, but I haven't believed in the Democrats for a long time.

I know that when I was a little kid Carter was president and the world was a much better place. Since then....

With a bunch of cowering nobodys as their only opposition.

70. The truth is in what people DO, not what they SAY
So tell me, where is the mythical two party system?
While we have HEARD grandious proclamations, it
sure appears that is "bid-ness" as usual.
"Bid-ness" as in the multi national corporate interests,
certainly not in the interests or representing the voice of WE, the people.

75. No, it makes them corporatists.

They, all 535 of them, act in the interest of the Multi National Corporate Empire, not we, the people.
Anyone who believes otherwise is seriously deluded.

76. Would you call Senator Webb a coward to his face? I'm not impressed with your OP.
Statement of Senator Webb on Passage of the Iraq Supplemental Bill
Washington, DC - The following is a statement from Senator Jim Webb regarding the Iraq War supplemental spending bill that has been passed by both houses of Congress:

"I worked very hard to try to persuade the Democratic leadership to include clear, restrictive language in this Supplemental. I did not succeed, and was disappointed in many of the provisions that remained. However, we are working under the reality that, on the issue of Iraq, this Senate does not have a Democratic majority. From the outset, we are a minority of 49, given Senator Lieberman's position on the war. This reality dictates our conduct. On the one hand, I find myself unable to vote against a measure that is necessary to fund our troops who are now in harm's way. On the other, I will not relent from my continuing efforts to bring this occupation to an end.

"I will continue to press for a strategy of strong diplomatic engagement, which will enable us to end the occupation of Iraq, to increase regional stability, to fight international terrorism more effectively, and to address our broad strategic interests around the world.

"My efforts will continue with the Defense Authorization Bill, which will soon be debated on the Senate floor. This week, I introduced a restrictive amendment during the Armed Services Committee's mark-up of that bill. I withdrew the amendment during the mark-up process due to a technical objection, but I intend to offer this amendment on the floor of the Senate when the Defense Authorization bill comes up for debate in the coming weeks."

hating myself, my party, and my country, for allowing this sham to continue under the guise of Democracy. I am exhausted...
