Poll question: What's Your News IQ??
What's Your News IQ?
Take the Quiz

To find out, we invite you to take our short quiz about prominent people and major events in the news -- then see how you did in comparison with 1,502 randomly sampled adults asked the same questions in a recent national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.

You'll also be able to compare your News IQ with the average scores of men and women; with college graduates as well as those who didn't attend college; with people who are your age as well as with younger and older Americans. Are you more news-savvy than the average American? Here's your chance to find out.

________________________________________________

My results...
Thank you for taking our News IQ quiz. You correctly answered 9 of the 9 possible questions along with approximately 4% of the public. You did better than 96% of the general public.

It has ZERO reflection on your "News IQ" (no such thing, really).

If you are here at the DU, you've got a higher IQ than most of America anyways!

After dating and living with my Japanese fiancee/girlfriend for 2 years, I don't think I learned more than 25 or 30. (Damn things just don't stick in my head.) I found that VERY frustrating. Very.

But I also missed one of my own accord, one that I really should have known. :dunce:

Still, my score was 7/9, so that is how I answered this poll.

54. If you didn't answer the first part of that question correctly, then
you don't GET the second part.

It was the minimum wage question. If you didn't answer that both houses had passed the bill, then you didn't get the second question as to how much the minimum wage would be increased.

That's why you didn't see it. :)

76. The Senate passed it with an amendment. AFAIK, it's not yet assigned to a conference committee.
The last action on the legislation was in the first week in February. It seems all they give a shit about is being able to claim they voted for it ... and have no haste in actually enacting it.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has announced that she is forming an exploratory committee for president, thereby launching a bid to become the first female chief executive of the United States.

"I'm in," she said on a Web site, hillaryclinton.com. "And I'm in to win."

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=2810072&page=1

Usually there's the exploratory committee, and then the official announcement later. She made the exploratory committee announcement Jan 21. I'm just trying to find out whether she made the official announcement later. If you've got a link to something, that would be terrific.

46. I checked the press releases on her website
and find no official announcement. The website says it is funded by the exploratory committee. However, I consider that a moot point, that after announcing her exploratory committee she started campaigning, raising funds, going to debates. I would say you are then a candidate, unlike Fred Thompson or Newt or Gore, who are not doing those things. I also thought it was odd when I read the news that Brownback announced, because I thought he had done so a month earlier, and I just noticed Richardson's announcement. I was no aware of the multiple announcement tradition.

Which, of course, is a huge trouble with multiple guess tests. I wondered about the minimum wage too, because they have passed it, but they have not passed it in the sense of sending a bill to the White House. I have heard it was going to be attached to the Iraq bill. If they do that, it would be nice if they would dump the business tax cuts.

47. The question was did she announce
specifically. And the no response was, no she did NOT announce, just like that. So it was confusing.

And it matters, they just aren't the same announcement. I didn't make the rules.

68. Was Richardson not running until May 21?
http://www.richardsonforpresident.com/newsroom/pressreleases?id=0098

He announced his exploratory committee in January too.

http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2008/richardson/richardson012107st.html

Seems to me the media considered him running before May 21.

Dean didn't announce until June 2003, Kerry and Edwards officially announced in September.

Again, this is just the way it's done. I didn't make up the process. One of these days she'll make an official announcement, or somebody will show me where she did and I missed it.

83. Oh criminy
Go yell at the Washington Post.

"The word "exploratory" is not in any FEC regulations. Instead, the phase is referred to as "testing the waters," and an exploratory committee is legally just a campaign committee with "exploratory" in its name. When a formal campaign is announced, the candidate usually changes the name of the committee -- for instance, from "Obama Exploratory Committee," as the senator named his new entity, to something like "Obama for President."

I never saw #5, the one about how much the minimum wage was raised to. So, I really only got one wrong. I would have gotten that one right if I had seen it.

But how depressing is it that not one of the questions received more than 70%?

I mean, 30 somethin percent of people don't know we have a trade deficit? That more Iraqi civilians were killed than troops? Jesus.

30% of people not knowing we have a trade deficit just about explains the hardcore 30% of Bush supporters, doesn't it?

74. It's appalling. No wonder Smirk gets 30% approval. These people vote, too.
We're the most politically ignorant country on the planet, imho. The average European or Canadian seems to know more about Ammerican politics than the average American.

on the minimum wage number. They all seem too low. :(

edit to add:
Maybe this is almost like cheating. I get as much or more info from DU as I get from watching or reading "the news". And if the words aren't here, then the links certainly are.
