Outcome: Groped everywhere, hand luggage turned upside down. Once I collected it, each piece was disassembled as far a possible.
Background: TSA inspections were instituted at foreign airports on planes going to the states in the wake of the christmas bomber. There were TSA units inside the terminal gates (Australia). Guess they didn't appreciate Aussie humor.
From my experience, I wouldn't suggest the slightest dissent.

I was on a recent flight from Singapore via Hong Kong. We deplaned in Hong Kong, went through the typical security screening like you would going through customs back into the concourse and then every passenger had their carry-on baggage opened and searched at the gate. This all added more than an hour to the layover.
