OAKLAND — Fifteen young goats used for controlling weeds in the Oakland hills were found shot to death, with one of them decapitated and two of them mutilated, authorities said.

The goats were killed with a large weapon, possibly a .22-caliber rifle, but it’s not clear if the mutilations were caused by the shooter or wild animals such as raccoons or coyotes, said Sgt. Dave Cronin, head of Oakland Animal Services.

A jogger found the dead goats early Tuesday morning in a portable hillside corral set up by the herd’s owner near King Estates recreation area and about 200 feet from an elementary school, police said. Shots were reported around midnight in the area, but officers found nothing.

The herd is frequently used by the park district or fire department to control weeds and fire-hazardous underbrush on the hillside.

“It’s senseless violence against totally defenseless victims,” said Leroy Moyer, president and founder of Voices for Pets, a Walnut Creek animal advocacy group.

3. My son & his wife live near there and actually sent us some pictures

of the landscape..and the goats happened to be in the pics.

Where we live, they used to truck in sheep..and when the boys were little, we would always have to slow down when we passed those fields, so they could "wave at the sheep"..:)

6. What kind of sick person does it take to shoot penned, domestic

animals? If these people are found, they should be forced to have a psychiatric evaluation. I'm thinking that in some individuals this type of behavior could easily translate to humans.

and he hunts at those "preserves" where they take the "fearless white hunters" out in pickups and the tame, hand-raised wildlife comes up the the fence..they shoot them, and then go get drunk..and then shoot their fellow hunters int he face, sometimes:)
