The rise of Rudy Giuliani's presidential hopes has defied conventional wisdom: How can a thrice-married, abortion-friendly New York mayor, who let's not forget once lived with gay roommates, triumph in a Republican primary? According to most pundits, his campaign is actually a flash in the pan. Once conservatives discover Rudy's true view, he'll be toast. Our special correspondent Thomas B. Edsall isn't so sure. He argues that the old conservative litmus tests are fading. Social issues aren't nearly as important these days. Conservatives care more about style. They want a hyper-manly leader willing to beat the hell out of liberals. And ... that's exactly Rudy Giuliani. Edsall's essay is thrillingly counter-intiutive--and will change the way you think about the future of the Republican Party.
This is a clip from "The New Republic". I try to keep an eye on what the opposition is thinking and doing, and I was a bit surprised at the comment "Social issues aren't nearly as important these days."
BTW, they want yu to subscribe to rea the whole article, and I'm not THAT interested to spend $7.95, but the clip was interesting.
