3.) Gather in public. On Memorial Day weekend, get your friends, kids, co-workers, neighbors, aunts, uncles, grandfathers, grandmothers, and anyone and everyone you know together to publicly support the troops and end the war.
4.) Pray. Organize a prayer vigil for our troops at your house of worship. Honor the fallen.
5.) Make your voice heard in Washington. Call President Bush at (202) 456-1111 or email him at comments@whitehouse.gov. Call your Representative and U.S. Senator and ask them to use their funding power to support our troops and end the war.
6.) Get vocal. Buy a bunch of poster-board and markers. At a picnic or with family and friends, make signs that say “SUPPORT THE TROOPS - END THE WAR.” Bring them to your local Memorial Day parade.
7.) Greet a vet. Before Memorial Day Weekend gets started, get in touch with the Yellow Ribbon Fund and volunteer to provide welcome-back services and mentorships to injured soldiers returning home.
8.) Say thank you. Send a thank-you note to our troops through organizations like Let's Say Thanks or A Million Thanks. Better yet - gather folks together to write thank-you notes at a picnic.

I am writing to you in the hopes that my words will make a difference as well as to remind people of what this war is actually costing us. My name is Michele and my brother was SFC Isaac ... As the anniversary of his death approaches, and as I see President Bush preparing to veto a bill that will start the process of bring our troops home, I felt compelled to speak... I hope that this is published in every paper in this country, so that our President may know what the true cost of this war is. And if he should decide to veto, then he should hear our cries, he should know how we mourn, grieve and wail. I will like to end this with a poem I wrote about my dear brother.
********
For Shawn
They said it was an I.E.D. Those letters had never meant much to me.
An Improvised Explosive Device, That some insurgent cooked up one night.
It took from me the last bit of heart I had left. When God called my brother Shawn home to rest.
Oh Dearest, no more sorrow and no more worries for you, I try to find peace in knowing Mama was waiting see you through.
I try to think of the happy times and laughter we shared, But sometimes I can not take it and my soul starts to tear.
I care not about politics or for those who see this war as a game of chess, For the day I buried my brother I also laid my weary heart to rest.
Michele G., California

Putting Up the Signs

Both Channel 4 and 5 called me days before volunteers were to put up the signs for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Neither station was sure that it would be in Holliston to cover what has now become a bi- annual event.
Channel 5 did send a reporter and cameraman, the same two who covered the tribute last year. The reporter, a Holliston resident, asked me why I continue to do the tribute. I explained that it had become what some residents call a town tradition, a term I’d rather not use. I said I would feel guilty for those who had recently perished who would not have the same honor as those before them had, should we discontinue the project. Off camera, I told the reporter that the project was in fact getting old; I am fatigued at the continuing losses.
When yet another Boston TV station called to see if there was anything different about the tribute this time around, I could only say that the names had changed and that 650 more Americans won’t be returning home alive.
Each six month interval that the signs are hung seems to come a little sooner.
A contractor working on Hollis Street leaned over a fence and asked me “Do you do this every year?” No, twice a year, I told him. “Yes” he said, “I always see the signs, they really make you think.”
Upon my return home I checked the web site I use to obtain the names of those killed. Fifteen more Americans had been killed in two days, their names not released yet, pending notification of next of kin.
Their names will be added to the list already begun for inclusion in tribute for Veterans Day 2007.
One volunteer hanging signs offered up the fact that the war has gone on longer than WWII.
The sign hanging volunteers were a mixed bag, mostly veterans, two selectmen, one of whom brought his fifteen year-old son. One man, an Australian who lives in Austria and visiting the donor of the poster boards joined us.
For the most part, all of us would go about our Sunday routine and our ordinary lives come Monday morning.
But for those fifteen families who shall have a military officer knocking on their door within hours, life has forever changed. Makes you think. http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/5341771/detail.html">Telephone Pole Display Disputed - Verizon Will Allow Veteran To Post Posters
