LOL- The man renting Rahm Emanuel's house filed to run for mayor of Chicago
Meeks, Burris and Emanuel's renter file for mayor

|
UPDATED by John Chase at 4:55 p.m. with petitions filed for Meeks, Roland Burris.

State Sen. James T. Meeks filed his petitions to run for mayor today as expected, but there were also a couple surprises on the last day for candidates wishing to get on the ballot for the Feb. 22, 2011 election.

The man renting Rahm Emanuel's house filed to run for mayor. And as the 5 p.m. deadline appoached, a group of people filed what they said were nearly 20,000 signatures on behalf of outgoing U.S. Sen. Roland Burris as a "draft Burris movement."

The man who filed the Burris petitions said he has known Burris for years and informed him of their effort. Kenneth Sawyer, the now ex-senator's state director, was at the election office but said he was just observing and not part of the movement. He said Burris, who just finished his appointed term in the Senate, is aware of the effort and didn't want to stop it. He said Burris is considering whether he'd want to run.

The Emanuel renter, Rob Halpin, an industrial developer, said he has collected more than 20,000 signatures -- more than the 12,500 valid signatures needed to be placed on the ballot.
