Edwards assails Bush, GOP rivals
By PHILLIP RAWLS, Associated Press Writer
15 minutes ago

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Democratic presidential contender John Edwards argued on Thursday that President Bush has made the nation less safe and the Republican candidates are trying to become "a bigger, badder George Bush."

Edwards' remarks came one day after he challenged the idea of a global war on terror, calling it an ideological doctrine advanced by the Bush administration that has strained the U.S. military and emboldened terrorists.

Bush told reporters Thursday that Edwards' view was naive.

A short time later, during an appearance in Montgomery, Ala., Edwards answered back: "George Bush has made America less safe and less respected in the world. What we are seeing now in this campaign is John McCain (news, bio, voting record), Rudy Giuliani and the other Republicans running for president of the United States are trying to be a bigger, badder George Bush. Is that really what America wants over the next four years?"

Edwards, who supports a timetable for withdrawing from Iraq, said he would keep the country safe by going "after terrorists where they are."

2. Ditto. I think he would make an excellent
president, and I've been saying this same thing for a while -- that the repubs running want to be like asshole, and Romney is the worst of all. :scared:

3. And yet I can't help remembering ...
John Edwards's acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention in Boston in 2004. And that cringeful moment in which he said:

And we will have one clear unmistakable message for al Qaida and the rest of these terrorists. You cannot run. You cannot hide. And we will destroy you.

Ah, how quickly we forget.

4. Combatting terrorists isn't bad. The war in Iraq is just a stupid
and ineffective way to do it.

5. You cannot hide? We will destroy you?
C'mon: that was exactly like Bush's "smoke 'em out" rhetoric, and not the way we will dismantle terrorist networks. He was using the same macho talk he is today repudiating.

9. yes, that's exactly the same thing
as invading a country that didn't have terrorists in it until we created the perfect petri dish for them.

My, your logic is infallible.

11. Logic.... hmmm
Logic suggests that it was with the strong support of Mr. Edwards, as co-sponsor of the IRW, that we invaded that country and created the terrorist petri dish--despite his serving on the Intelligence Committee and full well knowing the reasons for war were bullshit. Don't talk to me about logic.

12. That argument is SO tired.

If you ever bothered to listen to him explain why he voted how he did...oh, wait...that would make you informed. Can't be having that. It's so much easier to parrot talking points.

10. To his credit Edwards has consistently been the first to the punch...
... when a where-do-you-stand-on-this-issue thing comes up. The other top-tier candidates are either following in his dust, else not getting the answer right at all.

15. Edwards is correct! And that is why I believe the Repub Nominee has not yet entered the race...
None of the ten Repubs currently running for the nomination has a chance of registering majority support in a General Election, and especially against John Edwards who beats them all by a greater margin than and other Democratic candidate.
