Kyl demands Bush tax cuts by Monday...or no START treaty
Brian Beutler:

Kyl: Dems Cave By Monday Or No START Treaty

Republicans say no Senate business until tax cuts are extended and the government is funded -- presumably on terms favorable to the GOP. That apparently includes the START treaty. And now the man leading the resistance to ratifying the treaty during the lame duck says Dems have until Monday to come to terms with Republicans on those two issues.

"If the taxes all can't be resolved and voted on and completed and spending for the government for the next ten months completed by like next Monday, I don't know how there's enough time to complete START," Kyl told The Hill.

Though Kyl's demands may be outrageous, they aren't necessarily crazy. Unless President Obama and congressional Democrats stand up for themselves, there's no reason for Republicans to do anything but keep on taking hostage after hostage.

Sure, there's something unseemly about taking national security hostage. And sure, it's brass-knuckle politics to make a demand like this. But if the lesson that Republicans learn is that this is the kind of politics that works, they are going to keep on doing it, over and over again.

Remember, it's been just 24 hours since yesterday's "bipartisan" meeting and already Republicans are making a mockery of President Obama's show of good faith. Given how bad it already is, just imagine what it'll be like after the next meeting.

8. That's fine--offer a permanent tax cut for all making less than $500,000 or so
(there's the compromise), all other tax cuts expire. It will fail because of Blue Dogs, everything will expire, but it'll be done. Then move on to other business.

25. Yep, that's it -- take it or leave it.
No reason to wait. If repukes won't accept the half-million line, then let 'em all expire.

bipartisanship for repubs is only if they get 100% of what they and their corporate sponsors want.

19. See? This is how Repuke run/ ruin our country!
No one stands up to their madness, everyone just smiles and waves politely. Even if they shoot you IN THE FACE, you just wave and say 'sorry, my fault.' MADNESS I TELL YOU! Until that one aspect changes, the Dems are likely to cave in to every demand the vocal minority makes! This is SICK, beyond redemption and an obvious sign we have no power in D.C. Looking at a full blown corporate killing spree by the GOP, because no one will stop the madness.

Sick, pathetic and wrong.

20. I do understand that the right wing OWNS the major media outlets and
therefore they find it much, much easier to get their version of the issues out to the public, but can't our side even try to frame the issues the way they really are? Pelosi manages to from time to time, and so do Sanders, Dean, and a few other Dems, but for the most part the Dems with the best chance of getting their framing heard by the public (like, you know, the presidentjust quietly accept the most fraudulent, damaging right wing framing of every issue.

24. It's a matter of priorities
I 'm sure others will have noticed this too.

Regardless of whether START treaty is good or bad, the GOP is perfectly ok messing with America's safety as long as they get those tax cuts for the very wealthiest.

IF Start is a good treaty, the GOP will kill it so they can get their way.

And if START is a bad treaty, they will pass it as long as they get their way.

This shows where their priorities are.
