'Snus' Banned in MA, EU: Swedish powdered tobacco tablets
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 05:46 PM by denem
- produced in Sweden since the 1700s
- dissolves as opposed to being chewed or sniffed
- carcinogenic nitrosamines 3% compared with US tobacco*
- lung cancer rates in Sweden are the lowest in Europe
- food grade additives only

*Nitrosmaimnes are produced curing / roasting of protein:
The highest natural sources are peanuts, bacon and barbecued meats.

Call to legalise 'snus' in Australia
Carol Gartner, based at the University of Queensland's school of population health, says it could help cut the human toll among people who can't or won't quit smoking.

"Your best course of action is to quit smoking, but if you're not going to do that then this is second best," Dr Gartner said. ...

Sweden's smoking rate dropped from 40 per cent in 1976 to 15 per cent in 2002, meanwhile snus gained in popularity and 21 per cent of Swedish men are now daily users.

Despite this, Dr Gartner said the country recorded no increase in the rates of oral cancer or cardiovascular disease, and tobacco-related deaths in Sweden were among the lowest in the developed world.

One other point It also did not appear to act as a "gateway" to smoking, she said ... more the reverse ... a less visible way to consume tobacco than smoking, helping to denormalise tobacco addiction in the public's eye.

Why am I posting this?
1 Because even the word tobacco will stir up a hornets nest, not matter what the facts are;
2. I am using Nicotine lozenges made by GlaxoSmithKlien at the cost of $40 per 72 to quit
as opposed to $10.00 for 'snus'; and
3. For every other drug, DU opts for harm minimization; For nicotine addicts, amongst the most addictive of all substances, it's a collective fuck you.

4. well it's still not as bad as cigs. here's the deal with Snus;
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 05:44 PM by dionysus
there's two ways to cure chewing tobacco, one is heat, the other is steam. so say a Skoal is cured one way and Snus the other (i forgot which is which)

American chew like skoal has more carcinogens, and produces the thick black spit that will make you sick if you swallow it.

Snus, on the other hand, had very few carcinogens, and what little spit that is produced can be swallowed.
