3. I think I've done them all, at one time or another, except running for public office...
I worked on my congressman's last two campaigns, so that involved doing several of these, talking him up, GOTV calls and knocking on doors. And I did march against the impending Iraq war in 2003... about the time I first joined DU. *sigh*

17. I see our join date is the same. Although I was posting in early 03
while the drums were still beating and people would shout us down if we said we should NOT go to war. I remember "shock and awe" very well. I cried as I held my stomach that carried my now 7 year old daughter.

why are we still there?

Cheers

22. I think that our join date must be almost the same,
Since I was also here well before the Iraq war, followed the whole build up on DU, too. I took part in a protest in my small town, a candlelight vigil that I posted about here, at the time. I was amazed at the turnout and was moved by the sight of the long line of candles moving through our small downtown at night. I remember thinking that it would have made an impressive pic if the local paper had covered it, but the only pic that they printed was of the lone "support the troops" guy with his sign. *sigh*

I also remember "shock and awe," felt physically sick the whole time, as well. I never thought that they could get away with this insanity. I kept thinking of a pic that someone posted here, of a small Iraqi boy also taking part in a candlelight peace vigil, struggling to push his lighted candle, on a piece of wood, out into some water. I kept wondering about that child, if he was scared, or if he was even alive, then... ;(

And your baby, yet unborn during that time, is now seven-years-old. Really puts things into perspective, doesn't it? And I still don't know why we're there, either. :(

Rhiannon

13. Me too
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 09:42 AM by bigwillq
on edit: I should add, though, that I no longer donate to candidates or phone bank. The amount of phone calls I received the last two elections became too much. I can no longer phone bank because it has annoyed the heck out of me how much these campaigns call. I could never put another person through it! So no more phone banking for me!

7. Everything but running for office - but, I was PTA Vice President for 5 years.
Don't know if that counts. There's this myth that all DUers do nothing but log-on and complain all day.

Bullshit.

8. All of those excepting running for office,
Not to mention I've managed more than one campaign on a local and regional level, and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. I also got arrested in the course of protesting the building of a nuke plant.

A lot of that is in the past, since I dropped my connections with the Democratic party nearly twenty years ago out of sheer disgust with the party. However I'm still active locally on various issues. I'm rather post-party, focusing on issues, not people.

The running for political office, though, is only to become the DFL precinct chair and a convention delegate.

The people I meet there are in need of direct "activism". They beg for it. For their kids. For their parents.

Seems more direct, to me, than trying to convince the adamantly ignorant.

I do it for me also. I get to experience much love and affection and appreciation of new acquaintances on a very deep level. Worth every minute!
