Wow. Just wow. US defending human rights violations in London cables

Basically, the UK was telling the US to not get them involved in US flight missions (taking off from UK owned bases) that would involve human rights violations and asked that the US give details of flights so the UK would not be "blindsided" as they were with one mission that came to light in the media. And the US's reaction: But that is just soooo much of a BURDEN to tell everyone you want us to tell in the UK government about upcoming flights and, yeah, we agree with human rights being important, BUT we can't risk counterterrorism being disrupted just because we MAY violate human rights.

Embassy London finds these additional conditions for HMG approval and assumptions about our ability to monitor every CEDAR SWEEP-related apprehension to be not only burdensome but unrealistic. We recommend that DOD and State officials raise with UK counterparts the concern that excessive conditions such as described above will hinder, if not obstruct, our cooperative counterterrorism efforts. While we share HMGs concerns that human rights not be sacrificed for the sake of CT, we cannot take a risk-avoidance approach to CT in which the fear of potentially violating human rights allows terrorism to proliferate in Lebanon
