Every teabagger I know is over 70. I know it's only anecdotal evidence, but
I have to say it's about the only thing keeping me going and not plunging into total despair right now.

I don't think the teabaggers are going to win, or are going to take over the U.S., because I think within another decade or two, the teabaggers will be gone and no longer voting.

There will always be the fight against the corporations and greed, but I think when the teabag generation dies off, there will be less of a problem with homophobia and racism and sexism.

I know not all people of that generation are racist or homophobic, but there are for sure some people in that generation who are. And they sure are loud lately.

1. age and racism
These two things do not necessarily go together. I can think of more than one person out there with the teabagger mentality that is under the age of 70 years. Just look around.

They are all over the place FYI, including members of your generation and my generation.

Racism has roots that grow deep in the minds, hearts and souls of many.

No single group is exempt from being racist.

6. I wish I understood what causes racism and sexism and homophobia. Is it just some
evil that is born fresh into every new generation? Does it come about as a result of cultural trends? Or is it just passed on from generation to generation?

Why can't we defeat it?

I believe that some of it could be generational but I don't see it that way. I've seen people like this in all colors, sexes, ages, etc.

You ask a complex question that I cannot answer. I can only give perspectives on how I see it and I don't think it is at all fair to try to blame all on one group.

Frankly, I think we have come far.

I can remember the days of the segregated buses and schools.

I can remember the day when a child could not attend schools because of their socio-economic status in society. I can remember the day that it mattered if you were a Catholic or a Protestant in the schools as well.

I remember the days that the Black person had to sit in the back of the bus.

I can remember the day when a racially mixed marriage was absolutely not allowed in our society; it was condemned and shameful at best.

I remember the day you could be lynched for being a homosexual.

I can remember the day that a woman could not easily obtain birth control products. I remember the day that abortion was illegal.

I can remember the day that you could get fired from your job for living with a member of the same sex; no one would ever admit to being "gay".

We've come a long damn way IMO.

As for the racists etc. that are left behind, let them stay where they are as the rest of us move along in life and continue to foster change.

2. The only tea-bagger I know personally is 34
When I lived thru all that historic stuff back in the '60's I swore my generation wouldn't raise anything that 40 years later could be ageist, corpratist, homophobic, racist and sexist.

But 40 years later, one of them is raising my grandchild.

I think that my retirement and life on the planet in general would be more secure if those 30 something teabaggers were quiet and not voting.

As I stated in an earlier post, my generation has done much. Those 70+ have done just as much if not more.

I honor the elderly among us. I value each and every one of them because they have something I do not have and that is wisdom. With age comes wisdom and you cannot buy that. ;)

Fixing Medicare WILL be good for EVERYONE. Republicans are just looking for more opportunities to destroy it and throw more "care" into the not-free market run by Saint-Co., amongst others.

listens to beck who apparently knows everything and whatever he says IS true no matter what proof or evidence there is that shows he isn't telling the truth. i have given up even trying to discuss anything with my brother. it is very sad really. he must think he sprouted up from nothing and made himself what he is with his house and camper.... never mind that he is perched precariously on the edge of a chasm that any injury or job loss could send him careening into living in his car. just like the rest of us. only illegals get welfare and food stamps. illegals and all those lazy black folks who live in nyc. how many times can you tell someone that illegals CAN"T GET WELFARE OR FOOD STAMPS!! you have to prove you are a citizen or here legally! grr. and when he refers to all those lazy welfare people, he is referring to me who have been on assistance and am currently getting state health insurance. but that is different somehow.

he also would freak out if he caught his son playing with dolls when his son was younger. somehow he might catch teh gay or something. brother.

Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 01:37 PM by pitohui
there are plenty of young racists, in fact, i think many of the young are the most racist, because that brief period of time where we all went to the same schools and got to know each other, has vanished, and society is mostly very much segregated by race and class

rich/upper middles/aspiring now all send their kids to private schools, there is never a time where people meet and learn that people are really people, fellow human beings, even if they happen to be born poor

i WISH your observation was on the mark but it isn't even remotely close to reality

we had a brief moment in the mid-century where it looked like people were really waking up and shaking off their hatred, and in that time we have made some amazing strides fighting racism/sexism etc. but it has completely stalled out...and the die hard teabagger neo-nazi types are roaring back as full of hate as ever

the folks who consistently spam the entire internet with hate against "canadians" are NOT the over 70s, they're the kids...and that's damn scary

as for as gender equality, i have given up hope that it will happen in my lifetime, my generation made the most strides but ultimately all the benefit and cool jobs for women went to the upper middle class and the very beautiful women who married the right men, for the rest of us, we have actually lost ground and are pretty much completely despised -- and younger women know it perfectly well that they don't have equal chances in the job market, they're basically looking to make it by selling their ass, it might as well be 1800 or 1900, nothing has changed for most of us, we are either sex objects or we are considered to have nothing of value to society at all -- i realize it isn't just tea baggers and "christians" who despise women, but i see nothing to give me hope that i'll be considered equal in my lifetime -- of course, too much of my life has now passed for me to ever make up the lost ground/lost opportunity/lost earnings but i hate to see the same thing happening to younger women -- most of them just take it for granted that they have to strip for extra money or marry "a good catch" for extra money

it breaks my heart that, in 2010, the best way for a young woman to make a lot of money is to catch a rich man and have his child -- our society doesn't really believe that women have brains and it's promoted in the media constantly that this is our role...

the world is improving but so slowly that just waiting for the 70 year olds to die sure as hell won't help any of us alive today

30. it will eventually i think but no, not in our lifetime
civilization has been around for thousands of years and for most of it, it's been hell for most people

it was unrealistic of us to think it would suddenly be utopia in our lifetimes

we make slow incremental changes and improvements and contribute to a great fabric but i wonder sometimes if it won't be another thousand years before we have true equality and freedom for all

it will come someday, all we can do is try to leave this place a little better and hope the small kindnesses eventually add up
