Guess society is getting so crazy that "crazy" is not really so crazy anymore...

A Fate That Narcissists Will Hate: Being Ignored

<snip>

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (due out in 2013, and known as DSM-5) has eliminated five of the 10 personality disorders that are listed in the current edition.

Narcissistic personality disorder is the most well-known of the five, and its absence has caused the most stir in professional circles.

<snip>

One of the sharpest critics of the DSM committee on personality disorders is a Harvard psychiatrist, Dr. John Gunderson, an old lion in the field of personality disorders and the person who led the personality disorders committee for the current manual.

Asked what he thought about the elimination of narcissistic personality disorder, he said it showed how “unenlightened” the personality disorders committee is.

“They have little appreciation for the damage they could be doing.” He said the diagnosis is important in terms of organizing and planning treatment.

2. Social networking sites made narcissism the norm, not the exception.
My kids spend hours crafting their profiles, seeing who likes what, who friended them, etc. You are nobody without a web page of your own.

3. Unless there's an actual treatment for narcissism
and considering how prevalent it is (most of us are narcissistic at one point or another), it makes sense to discontinue focusing on it as a distinct pathology. When it coexists in other personality disorders, it is a real problem, but only as a part of a more severe disease process.

Besides, the headline is correct. They're going to hate that.

6. It's never been a psychological problem for me......
....I've always been too good-looking and nice for it to be. When you're one of the most important people in the U.S. and are always right, no matter what, what's the problem?
