Columbia U To Students: If You Want A Job At State, Don't Link To Wikileaks
Rachel Slajda | December 3, 2010, 6:54PM

Students of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs were warned this week not to spread the Wikileak cables online if they ever wanted a job at the State Department.

The warning came through the office of career services, from an unnamed alumnus who now works at State and wanted to pass along the message.

"The documents released during the past few months through Wikileaks are still considered classified documents. He recommends that you DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter," reads the email, sent by the office of career services. Engaging in these activities would call into question your ability to deal with confidential information, which is part of most positions with the federal government."

2. Well, yeah. It would definitely suggest you can't keep your fool mouth shut.
Probably too late for some of them.

3. I suspect they're right....
...based on my own experience 30 years ago. There wasn't an internet yet, but State had an eye on its prospective employees, and things like Seabrook protest participation mattered.

4. That's sad, because it's hard to find better examples of how diplomacy works.
Of course, the warning is about a week to late for young political junkies.

6. State has the same directive for their own employees
And there are valid reasons to do this actually... if you want to work in any capacity at the Federal Government.

As is. these cables are truly not that remarkable in the history of foreign affairs... the reaction here though is...

7. We're like a tribe of chimps
One starts whooping and hopping up and down, and the rest immediately join in.

10. actually it reveals something else
Most Americans really are not aware how this, or any other Empire, behaves.

Nor are most Americans really aware of what is done in our name regularly. So yes, Assange did us a favor, but not for the data itself. Yes, there are a few things that have been more surprising... even if we knew. The extent of the Shia-Sunni division is much deeper than I believed previously for example. But people are now seeing what is done in their name, and going over to your local library and pouring over thirty year old cables is not as sexy.

In a way, I hope people wake up, oh and as to the reaction from the government... Empires do what Empires do to defend the Empire... if they just ignored the whole thing it would be seen as less important.

By the way I can keep secrets... but if a kid is thinking of going to work for State, or for that matter getting a clearance in the military, better not go and look at formally classified top secret, no foreign eyes documents...

It is a matter of... whether we can trust you with this material.
