Do Any Of You Remember The Term...Cradle To The Grave? |
|
It was supposed to be: joining a company, making a decent wage and sticking with your job until retirement brought you a nice pension. A real and solid middle class senerio. Unions kept up with cost of living expenses.
My son is graduating from a University next week. He's thinking about Officer's Training School. He feels major companies do not have any job security. (And he's a Business Major)
I'm now terrified that "Cradle To The Grave" will take on a brand new meaning in his decision.

Had totally forgotten about it though. Seems almost laughable these days. Hell, it's been pretty laughable my entire working life.

2. Keeping people around is not part of the model anymore |
|
The model now is: Use them until they're spent, then discard them.

4. Companies used to have values that read something like this |
|
"People are our most important asset"
Today, everything in the corporate world is about one thing - the investor.

5. Maybe the Business Major |

Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 08:47 AM by mstinamotorcity
can start his own business. And start by basing it at home. Tell him to find out what it is he loves and formulate it into a business proposal. Maybe you can make it a shared business. Those businesses where every one makes the same wages. Everyone has a stake in the business doing well. Even the janitor makes the same as the ceo.Everyone is treated equal.Maybe you can join in with your son and start a family type shared business.Don't give up yet!!! There are a lot of Marketable things you can do but haven't tapped into yet. Take your time and put your thinking cap on and take a chance on yourself. And when you succeed don't forget to hire another person with a dream. You will SUCCEED!!!!!

7. No, it's supposed to start earlier - infant healthcare, and education |
|
"from the cradle to the grave" is about the whole of society, and government services in particular. Companies do not help you when you are a child. It's not "from graduation to the grave".

16. And most companies won't hire anyone over 40. |
|
So you go to work for a company, they discard you, no one will hire you, and...we raise the age for Social Security. What has become of our nation? What is to become of us?
