Is Barack Obama Stupid?

New CBS News poll out confirms every other poll we've seen on the topic - the American people are solidly against tax cuts for the rich.

53% of respondents said there should only be tax cuts for the middle class and no tax cuts for people making over $250,000. That's the number most people in the media are using, but that's not quite accurate. Another 14% said they don't want tax cuts for anybody, including the top bracket. So, the reality is that an overwhelming 67% of the country don't want tax cuts for the rich (including 52% of Republican voters!). Only 26% said that everyone should get a tax cut, including the rich.

So, let's do the math for people who are a little slow. That's 67% to 26%. That's a crushing 41% lead. If it was an election, that margin would be so large they would think it was rigged. The group that doesn't want tax cuts for the rich is more than two and half times the group that does.

If that weren't enough, there is an internal memo being sent around to Democrats on the Hill by Anzalone Liszt Research that shows that 77% of Americans would let the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire if the extra money went toward helping small businesses and balancing the budget. 77%!!!

Now, as a politician, how stupid do you have to be on the other side of this issue? ....

...the stupidity of the politicians per se, but what is the level of their corruption? Which based upon what we've seen lately, is not only monumental but a foregone conclusion for many (all Republicans, certainly), if not most of them.

Many pols will support tax cuts for the rich because they are themselves rich or wannabees. They all want cushy jobs for their relatives or themselves on Boards or some other kind of fake job or whatnot when their careers in politics is over. I know we were all taught in grade school that America was a republic with all these great-sounding democratic principles and everything, but it's not. Never was. We live in a fascist sate.

Call me a grim old fatalist, but I just do not see the human race turning things around. Not because humans are inherently evil (although pimping Gaia to death comes close), but because we are what we are. In any case, we are not going to stop eating, shitting, burning up stuff to stay warm, or following the genetic imperative to breed. How can we solve the problem when we are the problem, other than by self-extinction?

This time I don't think he's wrong, per se, just not looking at the whole picture.

The deal is done, it appears. The Bush tax cuts will be extended for 2 years in exchange for a 1 year extension of UI benefits. It's not a great deal, but I'll take it. Those UI benefits have a direct, stimulative impact on the economy, and they will avert misery for millions.

It's clear, though, that neither party gives a rat's about the deficit.
