jobs I've applied to recently |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 09:56 PM by WhaTHellsgoingonhere
I had never thought about doing this, but what the hey...
At the end of this month, I will have been without permanent employment since being laid-off due to "resturcturing" three years ago. I've had some temp work and some part-time work. The last day I earned income was July 17. I haven't had an interview for full-time employment since June. I'm 44--44 is the new 50 you know!--and have worked in finance the past 15 years. I have a degree in economics (1988--1988 is the new 1888 you know!), and a degree in HVAC (2009). Unable to find work in finance, I went back to school for HVAC. My last perm job was in financial planning with a huge, mega employer in downtown Chicago.
So, here are some of the jobs that I've applied to recently, like, since November. I can't say that I've been told that I didn't get the job, because no one has bothered to contact me.
statistician HVAC tech (I went back to school and got an HVAC degree) financial analyst UPS driver helper/shipping & receiving Accountemps Inventory analyst economic analyst logistics analyst delivery driver Excel expert data analyst research analyst travel reservations agent rebate analyst (temp) claims adjuster market research analyst personal driver
Just thought I'd share that.

1. Same boat. But 60. If I had a $ for every one I'd applied for, I could retire. |
|
Just no response at all. Disheartening to say the least.

21. Yep, they don't even acknowledge getting your resume. |
|
I've been officially unemployed for almost 10 years now. I turned 60 last summer. Luckily I have a skill that earns me eating money by repairing computers.

for the future, but I don't. Just want you to know that inside I am feeling for you and hope things will change and that there is a better future for all, some sort of a turnaround for you and others who are sharing your same dilemma. I hope you have family and friends nearby to give you the support and hope you need to get through this. You don't know me but you are always welcome to post here.
Take care & whatever, do your best to keep as much of a positive outlook as you can.

6. I also have not worked at a FT perm position in over three years |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 10:10 PM by Sanity Claws
I have applied for over 50 jobs in the last four or five weeks. I have not received a response to any of the permanent positions but have received interviews for temporary/seasonal work.
Online applications seem to go into a black hole, from which nothing escapes.
Lots of people are in the same boat as us.

He "freelances" but it doesn't pay any of the bills, really.
It's getting to him.
To me, too.

10. You know, it used to be that business and finance was king |
|
Remember when everyone needed an MBA, no matter what?
So, you'll be damned if you don't to take a 40 thousand dollar pay cut and don't have health care. Hang in there, but keep telling your congressional rep the story until they run away from you screaming. I'm already on it. It has to gain momentum. We can't die off.
I don't have an identical situation, rather, I'm one of the under-employed, due to being limited to less than 20 hours, not eligible for benefits.
Careers like mine maybe not king, but they had career ladders when you went on to get a degree, and I did. Now that avenue is a small winding road with lots of check points. They want new grads and low overheads. Now, is it meaningful to be in health care professionally licensed, degreed in education with a broad background of experience with extra credentials? Nice... but not appreciated and it doesn't matter that I can fit into different settings, and am physically fit.
Do legislators in Washington understand these things? Fuck no.
I actually caused my under-employment by choosing to leave an oppressive company that became a global monster with no heart. It caters to an ever wider dysfunctional health care system. I'm trying to hang while also serving local government as an official. Now, I really get to see the shit hit the fan. Yet, everyone wants us to "help our way of live". Do they realize how this happens?
We've got to get angry in the right way together.

recently retired, you would be surprised (maybe not in this economy) at the number of collage educated truckers I have seen on the road. And yes, there are jobs available but you have to stay on the road for weeks at a time and run team.

14. Any good job has benefits like insurance, |
|
anyone over 40 would cost too much to insure. There's the big reason...we are too costly to hire...
We would have been better off if Congress had gone for single payer or Medicare for anyone over 40, we would have had a better shot of finding employment that would pay our bills and not rob our retirement...
I just cannot figure why industry and big business are against single payer when all they do is complain about the cost of insurance for their employees...

16. I've been expensive since I was 23. |
|
I've been hospitalized twice and have to take expensive medication the rest of my life. But my condition is easily treated, so no one suspects. Now, if a health insurance provider was to tell my employer my chronic condition, I'd be out the door pronto. In my entire adult life, I've had health insurance for less than 10 years. And, no, I'm not insured now. I get my meds from Cook County--public option at work!

20. I'm moving in next week with my 59 year old girlfriend - out of work all year. |
|
She has advanced degrees, has been an executive director all her life - and worked hard all her life - and lost her job in a blatant power grab Jan. 1. I value my independence, but will not allow her to lose her house.
It's horrid out there. There are no jobs, and especially for any older workers. Our nation is collapsing; it's all about a plutocracy now, with bread and circuses for the peons.
