Long Island Woman Punished For Spreading Holiday Cheer
Long Island Woman Punished For Spreading Holiday Cheer

LINDENHURST, NY (WPIX) —
"All I want to do is bring joy to other people," Mary Richter told PIX 11 News outside her Lindenhurst home decked out in lights and holiday decorations.

She's been dressing her home up for the holidays for the past 12 years, every Christmas her display gets bigger, but this year Mary apparently crossed a line with her toy soldiers.

Even though Mary maintains the front of her lawn, it belongs to the village and she was handed a summons.

....

Off camera the village clerk told PIX 11news, the law is the law, and even though they never installed a sidewalk in front of Mary's house people do have a right to walk across her lawn.

Mary says none of her neighbors are being inconvenienced or even complained.

"They can't wait to see what I'm going to do, they can't wait til its done, because they know every year we change it we make it bigger we make it better."

The village also says Mary never got quote "official certification" from a licensed electrician for the wiring for her Christmas lights.

2. Oh good grief, one of those houses that can be seen from orbit during the holidays
I have little sympathy for her plight. The amount of energy she and millions of others across the country waste, along with the amount of pollution caused by all these decorations is a crime. And sadly, that amount seems to grow every year.

5. They are being a little overdramatic, aren't they, when...
this reporter says they could be jailed over Christmas for not answering the summons later this month.

If channel 11 really wants to show gummint oppression, there are real people already in the slam for no reason.

(Personally, I hate those plastic Santas, toy soldiers, candy canes, snowmen and the other such stuff-- they look cheap and crappy.)

6. "...every year we change it we make it bigger we make it better."
Bigger?
Maybe.
Better?
Not so much...

I've always thought that displays like that were mainly slightly crazy people acting out for attention.
This story doesn't change my mind on that.
